RWC 2011 moments

Posted by Clare Curran on September 11th, 2011

I know Grant will post regularly about RWC 2011. But I wanted to note a few moments that I have found important and special so far.

The first goes back to that day on 18 November 2005 when New Zealand was named as the host country for RWC 2011. It was a great day for us and it was due to the hard work, creativity and determination of a great team lead by our then Prime Minister Helen Clark,  supported by Trevor Mallard who was then Minister of Sport and became Rugby World Cup Minister.

The five members who presented our winning bid to the IRB were New Zealand Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Helen Clark, New Zealand Rugby Union Chairman Jock Hobbs, New Zealand Rugby Union Chief Executive Chris Moller, then All Blacks Captain Tana Umaga and former All Blacks legend Colin Meads. The clip below is etched in my mind as I’m sure it is in most New Zealanders.

And then this clip from Friday night’s opening ceremony; the challenge and the haka, which was viewed by around 2 billion people around the world and demonstrated the power the lies within us all. I watched this bit of the ceremony in my local pub. The pub fell silent as Kiwis everywhere stood tall and could feel immensely proud of who we are and what we represent to the world.

I know the RWC 2011 whatever the outcome for us, will boost our pride in ourselves as a small nation which can stand on its own and by working together, achieve great things. The haka is 8 mins and 53 seconds into the clip.

PS: I did think about putting up “that ripped shirt clip”  but figured I’d never hear the end of it. It should be said that for many people it was also a great moment in the RWC2011!

Tweet of the week

Posted by Moana Mackey on April 9th, 2011

I only really started using Twitter in earnest this year. Prior to that I couldn’t really be bothered. Reading endless updates on what people have for breakfast and what makes them “lol” didn’t seem like my idea of fun – even if it is Ashton Kutcher. However I have to say that once I started tweeting on a more regular basis a whole world opened up to me that I never knew existed. Unfortunately this world includes Tau Henare and Paul Quinn (no it’s not a parody account – it’s really him!), but it does provide for some fairly amusing exchanges if nothing else.

Unfortunately too many MPs who tweet do it in a really boring and uninspiring way. In an effort to reward those who take the time to tweet more creatively I want to draw attention to some of my favourite tweets this week.

Best MP tweet: Jacinda Ardern – although it was the photo that won it for her!

Jacinda and trevor

Runner up: Heather Roy – tweets what we’re all thinking!

Heather Roy

Press gallery tweet of the week: Patrick Gower – just coz I agree with him.

Twit of the week: Aaron Gilmore – we might not always agree but I would never accuse any Christchurch MP of not working bloody hard for their constituents.

Brickbat of the week

Looking globally this week Sarah Palin has been tweeting like mad about the threatened government shutdown as Democrats and Republicans struggled to reach a deal on the proposed budget.  There have been some very good tweets in response. I particularly enjoy following comedian John Fugelsang.

And I’m going to include this tweet just because I sympathise having had the same battle recently…

I reckon this is why National don’t want question time

Posted by Grant Robertson on February 24th, 2010

Trevor is too modest to answer his own question directly, but Jane Clifton has captured it perfectly in the Dominion Post this morning.

It’s becoming like a rerun of A Dog’s Show in Parliament these days, with Labour’s Trevor Mallard the purposefully stalking collie, and Education Minister Anne Tolley the heedless sheep that stamps its foot a lot and refuses to go into the pen.

That is certainly how it has felt in the House recently. Trevor’s questions have been factual, and go to the heart of the purpose of the national standards policy. Minister Tolley’s answers have been confusing, vague and often utterly irrelevant. Jane Clifton goes on

Like any good sheep, Mrs Tolley’s purposes are maddeningly opaque, and run to no set pattern. Two things are are becoming clear from their daily stoushes: one, that Mrs Tolley either cannot or would rather not explain the technicalities of the system, and two, that she cannot understand why her answers are regarded as unsatisfactory. This makes her haughty, and redoubles Mr Mallard’s roundup efforts.

The whole article is worth reading, hilarious and accurate. Question Time has not been great for National this year, and now they are wanting to avoid it all together.

The ‘end of term’ spirit seems to have spilled over into today, so I’m happy to carry that on a little further…

Go Trev

Posted by Clare Curran on November 28th, 2009

Well today’s the day for Trevor. He’s written about it enough, now he has to do it. 160km cycle challenge in Taupo. He’s up against it.

Firstly, there’s no Nikki Kaye to pitch himself against. Secondly, he’s probably still jetlagged. And thirdly he’s a bit sick.

Still, he’s Trev. And he’s no quitter. And we’re all there behind you. Just remember that when you’re riding up those big hills and tell yourself your body is a machine.

Oh, and can we get pictures?

Another milestone. 1000 posts. In just over six months. Thought it appropriate that Trevor was the 1000th. (I’m 1001-st) Look out for the next thing we do.

Look what I saw on my way to the Labour Women’s Council breakfast at 7am this morning – goodness knows what I will see on my way to the Rainbow Breakfast tomorrow morning!

In memory of Mission On

Posted by Chris Hipkins on August 17th, 2009

Last week the National government announced their new Kiwi Sport initiative that will take money away from poor schools and spread it more thinly over a larger number. They’ve also axed Mission On and taken money away from Push Play to fund it. I thought it might be appropriate to mark the occasion by recalling the launch of Mission On, and in particular the spirited way my colleagues Trevor Mallard and Pete Hodgson threw their weight behind it.
