Does Key know why he is going to Copenhagen?

Posted by Trevor Mallard on December 8th, 2009

We all now know Key is off to Copenhagen. Grant Robertson predicted it.

But he doesn’t know why? Somehow he thinks he is going to make a difference to the result.

We all know that he is only going because he was under intense international and domestic pressure to go. He doesn’t even believe in climate change and is scared that his comments while in opposition will be part of the briefing documents that his foreign counterparts will see about him. Not to mention the pathetic ETS he promoted through Parliament.

The best reason for him going has been given by Mike Moore. It is an opportunity to meet leaders who after a few such meetings might make themselves more available to meet him or take his phone calls.

Yep this is a PR exercise. Now back to watching questions for oral answer. :-D

  2. James says:

    Agreed, he’s just trying to:

    1. get himself a name on the international stage and;
    2. talk to Barack

  3. Clarke says:

We all know why he’s going – there’ll be a really nice photo op and a free polo shirt with a logo on it.

  4. ghostwhowalksnz says:

I wonder who was bumped in the NZ delegation hotel bookings to make room for ‘The Decider’. Im sure there will be some minor civil servant who was told ‘no room’ after been given the go a head, as the room bookings are shuffled downwards

  5. James says:

and what Clarke said, all he wants is the good stuff without putting in hard work… or evidently good, effective and constructive legislation.

  6. jennifer says:

Nah, you’re all wrong. He needs the airpoints for private travel to keep the subsidy numbers down.

These comments are outrages, and are about as simplistic as what you’d find on Kiwiblog. I’m on the left, but do believe that Key has SOME genuine reason for going. He’s no Rodney Hide in terms of skepticism. Let’s hope that he learns a thing or two and may return with some better intentions, he will find himself under great pressure after all. What did Labour ever do… they had nine years, were full of rhetoric but did next to nothing in cutting back on emissions – disgrace.

  8. Nicola Wood says:

“but do believe that Key has SOME genuine reason for going.”

Why’s he only going for one day, then?

  9. Spud says:

I just saw that we’re 0.2, I mean we’re not really doing that much harm, I’m kinda proud of that.

  10. Spud says:

I’m worried about climategate :-( Don’t really know what to believe anymore. :-(

I understand 15,000 delegates will be there and about 5,000 journo’s. I’m not sure if Charles and Jennette are counted in the 15,000 but if all countries opposition sent people, then what on earth (pun) is the value when there must be around 25,000 wanting their voices heard .. if anything comes out of this i will be a stunned mullet.

my point is new zealand is desperate need of honest approaches. we’ve been dishonest over time, and we need to admit that. Key is deeply dishonest. The public query over climate-gate is due to the apparent manufactured nature of its message. but, the real issue is that if we support dishonesty no one will ever take any political party seriously let alone us. new zealand will then deteriorate in tune with whomever holds the keys to power (no pun).

to gain support we need to call for a halt to climate-gate and call for the problem to be investigated fairly and openly. that’s a pragmatic approach instead of signing our country away based on flaky data. i hope that helps.

  13. James says:

Some very heart touching speeches displayed on OneNews this evening about effects of global warming to some of the smaller countries.

I sure hope the Copenhagen Meeting will listen

  14. James says:

@Spud There is a close up thing on Climate Change tonight, take a look, hopefully it will help you decide, either that or confuse you more!

  15. simon says:

why are we not preparing our shores for sea rises?

i’ve checked with all of the independent weather and climate agencies. None claim sea rises. None predict any temperature rises for 20 years out.

What we should think about is the damage to our low income earners, rates rises, loss of businesses, unemployment. i think we should think about the false allegory here and ask our members to call for an honest approach instead of being made to look silly if it all crumbles.

  16. j abba says:

    yep .. what Simon says

  17. Spud says:

@j, abba he he he simon says. :-D

@James – Drat, I missed it, was out drinking :-D Happy hour was great :-D Will watch it online tomorrow, thanks for telling me. :-D

If climate change is real then it’s up to china and the states etc. If it’s a con, then we’re all gonna be depriving ourselves for nothing.

  18. Sanctuary says:

“….It is an opportunity to meet leaders…”

Except that as pablo points out over at Kiwipolitico, at APEC John Key “…did not have a single bilateral meeting with anyone of import.”

  19. dave says:

Does Charles Chauvel know why he is going to Copenhagen? Other than to collect more airpoints and increase his carbon footprint..

  20. James says:

@Spud. Yes, it is up to China and the large emmiting countries. We emmit .2%, Australia 1.5%, and China 20.? %. It was on ONENEWS yesterday.

  21. Spud says:

Life would be boring if no one flew. :-( Yep, NZ is a tiny player. I’m all for caring for the environment, stongly so, but if this carbon thing is a con then the whole world is being tricked into being regressive.

  22. LabRat says:

“It is an opportunity to meet leaders who after a few such meetings might make themselves more available to meet him or take his phone calls.”
Oh thank goodness, for a while there I was thinking he was going to doom us to economic suicide.

Climategate has revealed the real agenda is a eugeneciststs wet dream. The UN is seeking to fully impliment agenda 21 and the rest of their PC anti nationhood crap and force the earths developed countries into poverty and kill the undesirables in the third world, not conspiracy but fact, they have written of their intentions(WILDLANDS PROJECT) for decades and now they will do anything to bring it to fruition, including fooling the supple minds it’s all about saving the planet.Does anyone care crops being replaced with biofuels are starving millions,Haitian mud cakes anyone?.I have no desire to have the UN or any other foreign governing body telling me what the law is in my country from halfway round the globe.

  24. Stuart Hawkins says:

Funny how ‘Climategate’ as you call it is simply confirmation that what I had been saying was going on all along.
