Back Benches Comes to Christchurch

Posted by Lianne Dalziel on August 12th, 2009

Wallace is bringing the Back Benches’ team to the Dux de Lux tonight to debate boy racers – or as my husband calls them – young motor enthusiasts!   The panel tonight is made up of Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove,  Green Co-Leader Metiria Turei, National List MP Nicky Wagner and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker.

I am going to be in the audience and hope to throw in my 2 cents worth. This is only the second time Back Benches has left Wellington – the first time was the Mt Albert By-Election Special in June – I am sure tonight will be even more exciting!  Starts just after 9pm but I think you will have to be early to get in.

Thanks Whanganui!

Great to see the community turn out in support of the Labour Caucus effort to reconnect with grass roots. We were well recieved and one of the first statements in the community forum was a vote of thanks from the local grey power branch in acknowledgement of inflation indexing the rates rebate to maintain value of the rebate over time. Health workforce development is another concern given that the Government is signalling a number of reforms for the sector. Finally the Governments cuts to the Adult and Community Education have seriously undersestimated the depth of feeling in coimmunities throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand…..A great range of issues covered!!

Two big events tomorrow

Posted by Sue Moroney on August 6th, 2009

Tomorrow I’ll be taking part in two big events in Hamilton and Auckland.

The first is the public launch of my bill to extend paid parental leave to six months which will be taking place during the ‘Big Latch On’ event in Mount Wellington, Auckland at 10A.M. The event is being held during World Breastfeeding Week and aims to raise awareness of the benefits of breast feeding by getting as many women nation-wide breastfeeding at the same time – 200 are expected in Auckland alone.

If my Bill is enacted, it would allow parents to be at home with their new babies for longer (it is currently 14 weeks paid parental leave) and therefore make it easier for women to breastfeed their babies until they are six months old, which is the recommendation from the World Health Organisation. The Bill has many other benefits for supporting families through these precious first months.

The other event will be in Hamilton at Garden Place, midday, where local people will gather to protest against the Government’s short-sighted cuts to Adult and Community Education. This disastrous decision by Anne Tolley will result in both Fraser High School and Melville High School closing down their hugely popular night classes – I don’t think she had any idea of the impact that these classes have in our communities.

Come along.
