Tweet of the Week

Posted by Moana Mackey on November 13th, 2011

Tweet of the Week: John Key and National’s endorsement of John Banks was the big news of the week. Could this be part of Key’s plan to undermine MMP?? Hard to imagine what else he got out of it…

Screen Shot 2011-11-13 at 9.02.31 PM

Although there are definite other advantages – an ACT coalition partner could “force” the Nats to go further than their plan for “partial” privatisation.

Screen Shot 2011-11-13 at 2.20.42 PM

Which is why that recorded conversation between Key and Banks is so interesting…

Screen Shot 2011-11-13 at 2.14.42 PM

Apparently we won’t get the details because the media feel it would be inappropriate to release the information given the parties hadn’t consented to it being released. Shame they didn’t feel the same way about the solo mums who had their private details made public by Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.

Press Gallery Tweet of the Week: Wow random. My grandmother didn’t trust her because she wore “dangly earrings in the daytime”.

Screen Shot 2011-11-13 at 9.07.58 PM

And the Republican primary debates continue. Media gold. Say no more.

Tweet of the Week (kind of)

Posted by Moana Mackey on November 8th, 2011

Every week I monitor Twitter and save the best contributions for my Tweet of the Week post.  Last week was no different – I took screen shots of the best posts and saved them on my laptop. Unfortunately due to unforeseen technical difficulties (involving my laptop and a large cup of tea – I really don’t want to talk about it) I lost all of those posts and attempts to go back and find them have been fruitless.

So I will be back online next week but in the meantime will leave you with this one tweet.

Screen shot 2011-11-08 at 11.18.50 PM

Most people judge Parliament on question time because thats what they see on the news. The shouting, the interjecting, basically the theatre of Parliament. But what they don’t see is the select committee work, the cross-party initiatives (of which there are too few) and the genuine respect that builds up between opposition and government MPs.

Allan was a very good select committee chair. And while we didn’t agree on many things, I always respected the fact that he didn’t let politics get in the way of facilitating important discussions on not just education but science as well – a subject dear to my heart.

Go well Allan. Haere haere haere atu ra.

Tweet of the Week

Posted by Moana Mackey on October 30th, 2011

Tweet of the Week: The election campaign kicked off proper with the party political broadcasts. Aside from the dreadful lighting and persistent buzzing sound John Key’s suit did seem to blend into the backdrop…

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 5.14.54 PM

The Twitter-sphere seemed to agree that regardless of which way you might vote the Labour opening address was far superior

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 6.57.43 PM

And again regardless of voting preference there seemed to be general surprise at how underwhelming the National Party effort was.

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 6.58.04 PM

There were many tweets along this line :)

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 4.39.21 PM

Wally of the Week: Tau’s erudite response to Labour’s opening address.

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 6.45.17 PM

I do enjoy the smaller party opening addresses though…

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 4.34.53 PM

I must admit I did think he was almost shouting at the camera

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 4.55.17 PM

Hehe

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 4.55.03 PM

Press Tweet of the Week: Couldn’t resist :)

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 4.28.40 PM

Nationals’s campaign launch today was a full on Crosby-Textor onslaught to spin asset sales as a major positive for the country because the one off hit of money would be spent on schools and hospitals (that the ongoing revenue from these assets is already being spent on)

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 7.16.43 PM

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 3.12.38 PM

And a very good point re: the spin about asset sales funding “modern schools”

Screen shot 2011-10-30 at 3.16.03 PM

And finally – the $60 million dollar question of which political party gets the all powerful John Rowles celebrity endorsement has finally been answered!

Tweet of the Week

Tweet of the Week: Hard to beat a picture with the Weepu brothers on #RWC victory night…

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 12.18.36 PM

So I guess we just need to host every world cup from now on?

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.10.58 PM

Most unexpected #RWC Tweet of the Week…

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.29.58 PM

Hehe..

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.09.06 PM

Press Tweet of the week: I’d assumed there was some elaborate algorithm or even a psychic octopus or something. Oh well.

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.47.40 PM

And in other news – President Obama confirms troop withdrawal from Iraq by the end of the year.

Screen shot 2011-10-22 at 7.36.37 PM

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.50.04 PM

With estimates putting the toll at nearly a million dead and unknown millions more injured it’s been an expensive and bloody conflict.

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.49.37 PM

And yet in this weeks Republican primary debate Michelle Bachmann said that Libya and Iraq should have to reimburse the USA for liberating them…. to rousing applause…. <sigh>

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.52.26 PM

Selective Amnesia Tweet of the Week: I think the staffers in Peter Dunne’s office who do his tweets for him should peruse the Wikipedia entry for United Future before doing so. They might also want to check out the pages for  ”Gordon Copeland” and “Larry Baldock”.

Screen shot 2011-10-24 at 1.25.52 PM

And finally a very compelling tweet from the #occupy movement – CEO of one of the US’s largest mortgage lending companies was prosecuted for  his role in a $3billion fraud scheme. He got 40 months in prison. A homeless man stole $100 from a bank by pretending to have a gun in his pocket. The teller gave him a pile of money and he took one $100 note and gave the rest back. He then turned himself in to police the next day. He got 15 years.

Tweet of the Week

Posted by Moana Mackey on October 16th, 2011

Tweet of the Week: National unveiled their billboards outlining their seven key platforms for a “brighter future”. One fairly glaring omission…

Screen shot 2011-10-16 at 8.18.12 PM

Meanwhile the nation’s interest and attention continues to be held elsewhere. After last week’s win sans Dan Carter, Piri Weepu has been elevated to Chuck Norris status.

Screen shot 2011-10-16 at 8.56.56 PM

Or perhaps a more homegrown comparison.

Screen shot 2011-10-16 at 9.05.58 PM

Press Gallery RWC hyperbolic Tweet of the Week: I almost didn’t give this to Paddy because I told him last week that he wouldn’t get PGToTT unless he quit the boring sports tweets…

Back in the world of politics this gets the “If you believe that you’d believe anything” award:

Tweet of the Week: For the most part the #RWC tweets have been pretty dull but good old French-English rivalries were always going to liven things up!

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 10.27.08 PM

Someone had to say it…

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 10.26.03 PM

Funny. When I lived in France they used to say exactly the same thing…

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 10.27.22 PM

Press Tweet of the Week: Crazy indeed.

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 10.32.38 PM

Political tweet of the Week: It was only a matter of time…!

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 7.45.49 PM

Umm an election…?

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 6.32.48 PM

Of course the death of Steve Jobs was overwhelmingly the dominant trend this week.

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 9.58.11 PM

The Westboro Baptist church are infamous for picketing the funerals of gay people.  One of the nutty Phelps clan tweeted that they would be picketing Jobs’ funeral because he’s evil. But apparently not so evil that they can’t tweet from one of his products…

Screen shot 2011-10-08 at 8.13.44 PM

And finally the following tribute image was created by Jonathan Mak – a 19 year old from Hong Kong. It has since gone viral and even landed him a job…

Tweet of the Week: The PM had an hour long promotion/host interviewer position on Radio Live – the only precondition being he didn’t have to talk about politics…

Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 5.30.53 PM

Unfortunately this was the same day NZ copped two credit downgrades. But the PM (live) promised urgent action. Not on our economic woes but on the shifting of Coronation Street’s time slot from 7 to 5pm…

Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 5.09.24 PM

Russell Brown points out the ridiculous irony in the PM’s sudden call to action for Coro…

Screen shot 2011-10-02 at 8.54.30 PM

So to the next big news of the week. Dan Carter is out. OMG. This is seriously bigger than Coro.

Tweet of the Week

Posted by Moana Mackey on September 25th, 2011

This weeks post is (unintentionally) brought to you by the ACT party! Tweet of the Week – Don Brash announces ACT’s intentions to decriminalise marijuana. I look forward to watching John Banks and Don Nicholson promote this policy on the hustings!

Screen shot 2011-09-25 at 9.18.12 PM

Then out of the blue ACT deputy leader John Boscawen announces his resignation. Means a clean sweep of current ACT MPs – all either resigning or being pushed out.

Screen shot 2011-09-25 at 9.11.42 PM

The Egonomist suspects a far darker intent…

Screen shot 2011-09-25 at 9.37.33 PM

And just a reminder that despite our political differences here in NZ we really have nothing like the extremes they have in the US. These tweets from conservative commentator Ann Coulter were in response to the public outcry about the recent execution of Troy Davis, a man convicted of murdering a police office 20 years ago. Davis’ supporters called for a new trial given that he was convicted on eye-witness evidence and since then nearly all the non-police witnesses have withdrawn their testimony saying they were pressured by police to make the statements.

Tweet of the Week: Sick of all the rugby score update tweets so best tweet this week goes to Angus in recognition of his concerted #failpenguin campaign against Happy Feet.

Screen shot 2011-09-18 at 6.08.44 PM

Scarily I could almost see this being true….

Screen shot 2011-09-18 at 6.08.17 PM

Big political news of the week of course was the Government “takeover” of the Rugby World Cup by Murray McCully. I guess we erroneously assumed he was already in charge when he was appointed Minister in charge of the Rugby World Cup. Our bad.

Screen shot 2011-09-18 at 5.58.50 PM

Vernon fears we’re on a slippery slope. They’ll never take Gisborne! (Actually given the sheer volume of Namibian flags around town I think they may be too late.)

And where does it end…

And finally – In a week where Minister Paula Bennett arrogantly rubbished the Child Poverty Action Group’s latest report, maybe this is how she justifies cutting the very assistance she received to help her study and get off the DPB from all other DPB recipients

Tweet of the Week

Posted by Moana Mackey on September 4th, 2011

Tweet of the Week: After more than 130 years the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) is closing it’s doors. As a provincially based MP this is particularly sad news as our media have been more reliant on NZPA for their NZ-wide news than the bigger media businesses that produce publications such as the DomPost and New Zealand Herald. Thanks to all those journalists who have over the years provided this invaluable service.

Screen shot 2011-09-04 at 8.26.39 PM

And in a prime example of why diversity of media is important, apparently the most pressing political question for Fairfax this week was ‘Who would you trust to babysit your children?’…. Seriously…

Screen shot 2011-09-04 at 8.22.31 PM

I guess “Are you going to sell my assets” not high on the list of questions for potential babysitters.

The very funny Brash parody floated numerous ‘Number three’ potentials…

Screen shot 2011-08-28 at 8.34.07 PM

Politically it’s been a pretty interesting week but in terms of Twitter there really was only one game in town. The only thing that even came close to the number of tweets about Alasdair Thompson’s outburst was the number of spelling variations of his name…
