Suspect this week’s episode will be a biggie
THIS WEEK ON BACK BENCHES—AUCKLAND SPECIAL: Watch Wallace Chapman, Damian Christie, the Back Benches Panel and special guests discuss the week’s hottest topics!
MOST LIVEABLE CITY: Auckland has been voted one of the world’s most liveable cities. But what makes it so super? The Auckland City Council has laid out its plans for the next 30 years? What will and should our biggest city look like in the future?
BUT WHERE TO LIVE IN THE MOST LIVEABLE CITY: Auckland is already our largest city but over the next three decades—the city’s expecting to accommodate 60% of the nation’s population growth or a million people. So, where will they live? Where will the houses go? Council planners want to see an additional 280,000 houses to the area over the next 30 years. Where will those go? Will they be affordable? And with the growth spurt—where are we going to put our BBQs?
I GET AROUND: Getting around Auckland can be a struggle now—so what happens as the city grows? Does the city need a 3rd harbour crossing? What about light rail? Better highways? Who and how will we pay for it? And will Aucklanders want to get out of their cars?
Join us for a night of LIVE pub politics in AUCKLAND from the BRITOMART COUNTRY CLUB: Wednesday, 6th of June. Our Panel: Green Party Co-Leader Dr. Russel Norman, Labour Leader David Shearer, New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters and National MP for Auckland Central Nikki Kaye.
Ahaa… the beautiful, sweet little National blonde from Auckland Central up against the three opposition political Goliaths? Watch it boys. They’ll be baying for your blood if you so much as point a metaphorical finger at her.
Anne I don’t often disagree with you, but Nikki should be able to hold her own. And I hope that fingers do get pointed because there’s a lot to discuss. Will be interested to see how she defends her govt’s policies, some of which I’m sure she must have issues with. Especially if education gets a mention. And tax, jobs (lack of) austerity politics, the killing off of TVNZ 7 and public broadcasting, child poverty…
Hi Clare…
I was being a bit naughty – tongue-in-cheek and all that. I hope they do point the finger for the same reasons as you espouse.
What a line-up!!! And they’re wasting it talking about Auckland, what travesty!
The real Nikkie Kaye stood up tonight on Back Benches. A sullen, spoilt brat who didn’t get her own way so she spent her time accusing Shearer and Norman (mainly Shearer) of telling lies. Unfortunately for her, the audience seemed more than clear who the real liar was… and that was herself.
Armchair criticism from Tokyo:
a) A well-briefed JA would have been more effective than DS; especially in the face of
b) Nikki Kaye (spoilt brat is a compliment) has no clue, but I would be interested as to any speculation about why she kept coming back to the Waterfront, and her (dark) hints about closing down the Auckland Port and RECLAIMING THE WATERFRONT (or was she just pandering to general Aucklander attrition/self-interest about the port dispute?); and
c) The other two, best described as reptilian, but no moreso than expected.
