Best not to beat around the bush and try to come up with this or that justification. When challenged about his recent on air rant against TVNZ 7, Mike Hosking took to Twitter to justify himself.
Thankfully, the statisticians pushed back.
It’s extraordinary when one argument is blown out of the water, how there’s an immediate switch to another argument. It would be best if Mike just said he doesn’t like public television broadcasting and be done with it.
Throng again has taken him to task.
The multiple positions of Mike Hosking

After Mike Hosking’s initial rant that stated that the size of TVNZ7′s audience didn’t justify its existence, he then moved to Twitter to defend his comments. However he went from saying the numbers weren’t big enough, to that they needed to outrate whatever else it was up against to, to that it didn’t actually matter how well it rated because he just doesn’t like public broadcasting.
@publicaddress @nztv @hoskingonzb do let me know what the numbers problem isI can’t workbout what you mean ?
@hoskingonzb
Mike Hosking
@hoskingonzb More than happy to explain: if 5 people listen to your show per week, that doesn’t mean 1 person listens per day

Hosking writes: “Wether it’s an audience at any given minute or show or week or monthIt either pays it’s way or it doesn’t”.
He can’t spell “whether”?
He thinks the possessive its has an apostrophe?
Why should anyone pay any heed to this illiterate ego on legs?
Great lets all attack somebody with a different opinion..
@sam, they are not attacking his opinion. Just his statistical inaccuracies. It helps to read all of a post before replying.
I wonder why they call Labour the nasty party? Well that clears that up then.
Rupert may be on the back foot elsewhere in the world but in what passes for TV in New Zealand he is becoming ever more dominant.
“Great lets all attack somebody with a different opinion”
All the unemployed, solo mums and the sick can take a well earned break.
We’ll call you back closer to the next election or just after the next set of bad economic data comes out… Whichever is sooner.
al1ens 10:07pm “All the unemployed, solo mums and the sick..”
So it is ok to attack somebody when you are for the “unemployed, solo mums and the sick” – in other words, the end justifies the means.
By the way, any data on how much the “unemployed, solo mums and the sick” actually need and/or use TVNZ7, or have we changed to just a general attack on a perceived right-winger and, of course, then anything goes.
@OneTrack. It’s only the likes of John Key who call Labour the nasty party. John Key as we all know is a liar and e.g. Bill English attributes his own bad qualities to others such as ‘inept’ and ‘mismanaging the economy’.
Besides, there is nothing nasty in proving that Mike Hosking is full of BS.
Hosking doesnt like the numbers for TVNZ7, doesnt understand what numbers are what, mind you.
Perhaps the numbers he does understand are when they come from a business that is willing to pay for influence.
Lets hope all the gratuities and complementaries are put on his tax returns, as they are required to be. Maybe he has number problems there as well?
@marsman: I think the “nasty party” perception goes far wider than just John Key – I think it has even been mentioned in the MSM from time to time. A post like this one (and some of the comments) will just help reinforce that perception.
OneTrack=Blinkers.
@Daz “Why should anyone pay any heed to this (pointless and nasty personal attack) on legs?”
Because more people listen to him than watch TVNZ7, perhaps? Because he has the ears of a great number of New Zealanders perhaps?
You can, of course continue to ignore public perceptions and opinions at your leisure. Hows that working out for you?
Lou has the right of it.
Hoskings might be an imbecile but people listen to him.
“So it is ok to attack somebody when you are for the “unemployed, solo mums and the sick” – in other words, the end justifies the means.”
I don’t know where you got that from.
All I wrote was if it’s time to pick on someone else for a change, all the unemployed, solo mums and the sick can take 5 until mr key needs an easy beat up.
The end justifies the means
“You can, of course continue to ignore public perceptions and opinions at your leisure. Hows that working out for you?”
I’d be asking the pm the same question
The way he had to front up on Campbell live, trying to cut the legs out from underneath another scandal, shows jonny babes now knows all about perception nd public opinion… Hence why he can’t backdown on asset sales.
Does anyone, really, take Hosking seriously?
He is motormouth pimping for advertisers.
Those who oppose the concept of TVNZ6 (and PB) in general need to ask themselves this:
What would you rather have on TV: Ken Burn’s Civil War or The Chawners?
@millsy –
The Chawners
I love TVNZ7 and there’s good stuff, but I like the Chawners better than that war show.
The dark sister really good some lard off!
@Aliens “I’d be asking the pm the same question”, Why?, the polls seem to indicate more agree with him and National than anyone else. Surely, even to the terminally obtuse, that means support.
Millsy , that KBCWis the worst sort of TV. Made for a book and then use the still photos where they pan across the scene to pretend its sort of an interesting visual.
Unless Ken Burns wants to be like Attenborough and be on the site of the battles he is wasting our time. Internet and books/e-readers do that old style doco much more cheaply
So polls are important as long as they’re not about selling state assets?
Even to the terminally thick… Like those in Epsom, the pm all of a sudden wears the look of the shifty merchant banker in drag many have long known him to be.
I reckon he has one eye on the polls and the other over his shoulder looking for daggers.
When he goes, and he will go. It’ll be the best laugh on tv since he bottled it when called a liar in an election debate.
Good stuff.
Thank you for reminding me of the reasons I don’t listen to Mike Hosking and I don’t listen to ZB.
Mike Hosking is over-rated. People listen to ZB out of habit, similarly people watch TV1 out of habit.
Many people have forgotten how to change channels or change stations!
@Ghost
Who is Mike Hosken? Sounds like he is perfectly suited to TV1
