Red Alert

Fingers in her ears

Posted by on March 29th, 2012

Is Amy Adams just doing what she’s told or does she have her fingers stuck firmly in her ears?

Perhaps she just genuinely doesn’t want to know the reasons for Australia refusing to allow Huawei to tender for its massive broadband supply contract because that would give her a massive headache and require her to do something about it.

The new ICT Minister  had this to say today:

The Minister responsible for overseeing the roll-out of ultra-fast broadband in New Zealand says it would not be appropriate for her to ask Australian authorities why they banned a Chinese company from working on an Australian project due to security fears, despite that company having won contracts to install broadband infrastructure here.

Read the rest here and watch how she says the same thing over and over again.

She is simply stonewalling, but what amazes me is how the MSM just swallow the tired old ‘trust us, we know best’ line? I guess it is just not approriate for taxpayers to know if their billion dollar investment is kosher? Best they focus on John Key’s latest tie? Much easier to report.

FOREIGN Minister Bob Carr has urged Chinese telco giant Huawei to push ahead with expansion in Australia despite being banned from taking part in tenders for work on the national broadband network.

The Gillard Government is defending the ban citing national security reasons but the Opposition has described it as clumsy, offensive and unprofessional.

Isn’t it possible our Aussie cousins are simply following the wishes of the US? Afterall the Aussies all but pant at US wishes. Perhaps NZ is making its own decisions? I am not ruling out a decision based solely on not upsetting the Chinese but I am wary f basing a judgment on Aussie judgment, which usually comes straight from Washington (just ask Goff Whitlam) ;)

Funny how the ‘robust advice that we follow’ didnt seem to happen for the Christchurch red zone properties announced a few days ago.

The original advice was the land could be repaired but “jerry’ didnt like that advice so went and got a second opinion which , surprise, agreed with him.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but should be raised

I think she’s out of her depth. She’s probably waiting to consult the PM as the GCSB falls under his jurisdiction.

I think Amy is pretty competent, is she not, and she seems to work hard? Not being personal here – but can someone tell me why it is that almost all Nat pakeha women MPs have blond (bleached?)hair?

If Huawei are such a threat, then why was 2Degrees allowed to set up a significant mobile network and retail their equipment to the public? What about the thousands of Huawei branded mobile phones in New Zealand? Do they also represent a security risk?

  9. Nathan Mills says:

Some dude at Huawei used to be in the military in China, so they must be spying on us? Well, on that reasoning, Air New Zealand is positioning itself to launch enemy troops into all its long-haul destinations… because Rob Fyfe used to be in the RNZAF.
