It’s impossible to overstate the contribution that Paul Callaghan has made to New Zealand as a scientist, teacher, innovator, conservationist, thinker, writer and promoter of ideas. He had a vision and a drive to share it.
Beyond this he was a wonderful, wise and funny human being. I am grateful for the legacy he has left New Zealand to dream big for our future as a country built on talent, ideas and protecting and enhancing our environment.
A man of courage who I was proud to know. Rest in Peace Paul.
My condolences to his family and friends.
Well said.
We have lost a great New Zealander.
luckily we can still hear some of his great contribution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhCAyIllnXY
We need a dozen Paul Callaghans: and though they are rare, New Zealand is the place to breed em. People who can talk and learn and know how things are across a half dozen disciplines and fields, who can talk left and right to a consensus on a range of stuff that’s good for all of us, who can show that innovative thinking is something that you can grow inside you, in your networks and your friendships. These kinds of intrapreneurial entrepreneurs bedded in place and people but with an eye on the big pictures: I dont doubt there are plenty more out there, and we should encourage them early, and find ways for them to speak into all sorts of important debates, and give them listening ears in a range of forums. That’s how we can really show our respects to Paul Callaghan.
Well said, David. Sir Paul was a marvellous communicator who will be sadly missed but whose work will live on. Sympathy to his family and friends.
