Leadership results

Posted by on December 13th, 2011

In the first contested election since the early 1990s David Shearer and Grant Robertson have been elected as Leader and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Chris Hipkins and Darien Fenton are the Senior and Junior Whip and Clare Curran is the Caucus Secretary and rep to NZ Council.

I might do a more considered post at some stage about the process but that requires more thought.

Well done the winning two and Clare
Not my first pick but then I don’t get to vote on this now but will in three years time, plenty of time to see how good the new team is in action by then
The one thing that this has shown is the real depth that Labour has, just can not imagine a National leadership battle if John Key was to suddenly stand down

  2. Jeremy says:

    Congratulations to the new leadership.

@ Raymond – Try yesterdays man English vs the Hollow man Joyce?

Well done. I think the next three years will be for sorting things out. Too many good potential MPs far too low on the list and missing out. There should be a real thrust on Education but where will that come from? Forget about being Prime Minister. Try to get the caucus in fighting shape after the next election.

Yep. Go for it David Shearer. Congratulations. Good interview with John Campbell on Campbell Live tonight. Even coped with the sudden, “Not wearing a tie David!”

Need to attack on charter schools now. Hasn’t been any discussion on these awful things. Labour need to be on the front foot.

I watched DS on Close Up tonoght and he was fantastic. Well done.

David Cunliffe must be placed number three and finance. If he is not then Labour will lose their only chance at economic credibility.

Both Shearer and Robertson are unable to answer economic questions beyond what you with someone who has an ideology. They deflect to social issues, which although they are important, macro-economics needs a Cunlife-like master.

    Parker for finance

    Now, let’s get back to work… ;)

Shane Jones has the skill and talent to hold Joyce to account and put him under some real heat. Jones should go to number 4. A woman at 5, maybe Nanaia, and Cunliffe at 6 in foreign affairs. Maybe Jacinda at 7 in education but she will really need to step up. Then Carmel at 8 in social welfare and she can stick it to Paula again for the West.

I disagree that Cunliffe can’t do foreign affairs because he’s got a young family. The opposition foreign affairs spokesman shouldn’t be travelling a lot. If he can’t do foreign affairs because of a young family then he couldn’t be leader let alone PM. If Cunliffe wants to take Labour left then he should do in foreign affairs and trade and finally put a line in the sand on FTAs.

David Parker should get Finance dancer. It’s not a renewal if you’ve got the same finance spokesman as the last election and he didn’t deliver. Cunliffe has to lick his wounds for a bit otherwise he will be constantly in the shadows and the media will report that he’s undermining Shearer.
