Man, I wanna have a beer with him! 8O

  2. Cherie says:

    He’s fantastic.

  3. David Farrar says:

So does this mean you are now against the free trade agreement with China?

  4. richie says:

I think that probably means he is against hungry children in New Zealand, rising unemployment, elderly living in poverty, lower wages, increased cost of living and selling our income generating strategic state assets to foreign multi nationals and governments.

National clearly aren’t against these things because they have done nothing to mitigate them.

  5. Trevor Mallard says:

No penguin – not against fair trade, or the agreement. But certainly support entertaining speeches after listening to Quinnie far too much.

I think sometimes we need to remember that our elders have been through more, have fought for our freedom, weather it was in wars or for rights of al kiwis, that our elders have made the mistakes we continue to make, they dont have goals of becoming super weathly, the wealth they have they want to be passed on to there children and grandkids.

They have wisdom mixed with no alteria motives, and they care about us all.

Maybe we should listen to what they say abnd realise they want a better longterm future for all Kiwis and can see further ahead than 3 or 6 years.

I fell sorry for the Quiin person, he was just told off.

  7. jennifer says:

@ David Farrar, have you provided those financials yet?

  8. Daz says:

He tells it like it is.

But if we treat him only as “entertainment”, more fool us.

  9. Greg says:

Trevor Mallard appears to be more interested in his phone then Errol’s speech, very rude to the guy.

  10. MrV says:

This guy basically seems to believe you can legislate wealth.

Do some research on the monetary system, which explains why we have experienced asset(house) price inflation. House prices were basically stable across the world from 1800 to 1940-1960 (depending on the country you look at).

That said a FTT seems like a good idea, ‘provided’ you can get all the other countries on board, otherwise the transactions will be done offshore.

He’s almost as cool as this guy:

When is the Epuni Baptist meeting – always my favourite!

  13. Trevor Mallard says:

    @Frontrower. 7.30pm Monday 7th

  14. George says:

    David Farrar

    “…free trade agreement with China?”

Nobody has ever satisfactorily explained where all our extra exports to China have come from. Diverted from other markets?
    Re-exported imports from third countries?

  15. Frontrower says:

Good. I always like watching candidates squirm when asked about their religious beliefs.

Very uninformed views re: GST. GST is the most fair and equitable tax system because it is very hard to avoid. It is fair because it is a user pays system. One cannot simply avoid paying GST through personal tax structures without making a false claim. Shop keepers have to declare it, and pass the costs on to the consumer. From an administrative point of view, a flat GST rate over all goods / services is very efficient. Purely income tax based systems leave room for grey areas of taxation to be exploited through perfectly legitimate tax structures (many of which were well known under the last labour government and have only been closed off in recent years by National [i.e. LAQC systems and restrictions on depreciation deductions - think about the increased revenue the government could have had through taxable income over the last 12 years if these systems had been stomped on earlier!]). He is also very welcome to read the Taxation legislation for free at his public library to find out ways in which he can legitimately and within the boundaries of the law economise his taxation. It’s all there (though is a hefty read).

And I would also note that the initial reasoning behind GST was to reduce income taxes.
I would also note that being a retiree does not entitle one to be rude at a public forum.

Good old fashioned tub thumping soap box oratory. Not many of these type of politicians left nowadays. Given more national exposure (no pun intended) he could well liven up the election campaign and start making people actually think about the issues, rather than the personalities – and that is a good thing.
