  1. Dan says:

Ed – gains made on sale of land bought with purpose or intention of disposal is taxable.

  2. ed says:

Dan – What amount of tax was collected in 2010 in New Zealand from the sale of land broght with purpose or intention of disposal? Or is that too hard for you?

  3. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Dan , checks to see if there was an ‘intention to sell’ are very rare and far between. Just rent it out for 18 months and then resell and say to IRD ( if they ever ask) you changed your mind or any other reason for selling .
Im in the property development business, but not as a trader, and you see it all the time

  4. Jeff L says:

    @ed – why do you say I’m a rightie?

I’m not actually – I’m a leftie from way back. However that doesn’t mean I can’t have my own opinions or critique Labour or left thinking. And I won’t apologise for that.

  5. Dan says:

Ghost – It’s one thing to say there is no tax on that gain, quite another to say the IRD poorly enforce it. They only cracked down on it after the property boom. Needless to say, those provisions are still there. To pretend those capital gains aren’t taxed at all is disingenuous.

  6. Rob says:

This really was an effective video. The longer since it was broadcast the more good things I have heard about it. Know 2 people that joined the party and one that gave a donation on the strength of it.

  7. ed says:

@ Rob: Word of mouth brother. Better than any other.

  8. ed says:

    @ Jeff L: “I’m a leftie from way back.”

Whatever you say brother… I’ll believe it cause you want to get your mate jonkey the monkey back into office… Now we can be friends right…

  9. ed says:

@ Dan: You are a bean counter just like jonkey the shonkey monkey

  10. Gregor W says:

    ed

You are awfully quick to lash out and make assumptions about people.
This is (normally) a place where people can debate ideas, present facts and play the ball rather than the man.

Might be worth you having a cup of tea and then actually reading through people’s comments rather than name calling.

  11. Jeff L says:

@ed To be honest I don’t care in the slightest whether you believe it or not.

However I just find it interesting that you appear to believe those on the left should offer unquestioning and unqualified support for left parties and that if they critique something they’re a “rightie” in disguise.

It’s the same deal when commentators like Trotter dare point out something that the left might not want to acknowledge – they’re attacked and maligned. The world is not black and white you know.

I suspect that’s at the root of why Labour is languishing so much in support. Perhaps by embracing free thinking fortunes would change?

  12. Jeff L says:

Wow, so I’m into moderation now for expressing views that don’t tow the party line? Or did the content trigger something?

  13. ed says:

    @ Jeff L:

Was just checking your reaction. You can never tell sometimes with the righ wing nuts when they are playing mind games.

Labour is falling appart because they lost their sense of humour. The cold hard truth is too much for most fun loving kiwi’s. If the message is true then making a joke out of the opposition won’t hurt it at all.

  14. Anne says:

@ Jeff L: it happens all the time. The automatic thingy gets a bit overly touchy sometimes. If the moderators decide a particular commenter needs to be moderated they will tell you in advance.

It’ll appear as soon as a human moderator gets time to check the comments – unless of course you have broken a rule.

  15. Jeff L says:

Thanks Anne – it’s appeared now. Apologies to the admins for jumping to conclusions.

  16. George says:

If you’re not a complete sociopath George then you’re not far off buddie</blockquote
So, one who points out that the world has changed in 70 odd years is a sociopath, eh? Yet another redefinition to suit by the Left to add to 'abuse', 'discrimination', 'poverty' etc.

People bought in to a welfare state to provide a safety net for those who couldn’t look after themselves. Outside of a few leftwingers they don’t want to be dragged down by the effort of having to support those who won’t support themselves.

Why did Don Brash lose you guys the 05 election again?

Actually, from a starting point almost as bad as that which faces Labour today, Brash took the Nats to within a whisker of winning the tresury benches. Labour must dream of the sort of comeback Mr Brash managed…

  18. George says:

Just tried to post two comments which disappeared into the ether (i.e. didn’t appear even marked for moderation).

Is there a problem with the site?

–> Edit: Well, this one’s appeared, but when I try to repost the missing comments it tells me that it’s a duplicate, but still no sign of the original.

  19. Anne says:

Yes, that’s happened to me in the past George. Still a few gremlins in the system. But let’s remember the MPs who run this site are not all IT experts. They do their best to keep things rolling…

  20. Hugo van Stratum says:

There are a few issues with policies,

With teaching you need to retire at 60 or you end up with no retirement. Teacher’s life expectance has been studied and teacher’s retirement and death patterns are such that those who retire late die early. It is not fair for you having a 67 year retirement goal you need other options. I think the next generation are not as health as the present ones so later retirement for all is not going to work well.

  21. Sofie Bribiesca says:

Great launch Labour. Brilliant work. Congrats to String Theory. More of the same please.

  22. Spud says:

“Just tried to post two comments which disappeared into the ether (i.e. didn’t appear even marked for moderation).”
Dude, you wrote yer comments in blood! :-D

  23. Bea says:

Ed, Dan is right. And there’s also the basic catch-all that if you buy anything with the intention of resale for a profit, the profit is taxable.

IRD enforcement in the area of tax on property transactions got them close too an additional $50million last year.

    IRD: http://www.ird.govt.nz/aboutir/gettingitright/focus/right-amount/focus-right-amount.html#incomefromproperty
    “Income from property

This year we’re increasing our investigations into property speculators and dealers who haven’t declared income from their property transactions for tax purposes, or have treated income as capital gain. In many cases, they haven’t filed tax returns either.

Over the past few years we’ve focused on education and raising awareness. While this will continue, we are also moving to a targeted audit response with those who continue to be non-compliant.”

  24. Tracey says:

Wow, george and I don’t always agree, and sometimes we have and I want to defend him now. he is not a sociopath. He has strong views, to which he is entitled and doesn’t deserve, as no one does, the vitriol that has started here. I am like Jeff a Labour leaner/supporter (from tiem to time int he past) and I believe in asking questions of them, holding their feet tot he fire and I have an underlying set of principles about leadership, amongst other things, which I measure ALL politicians by.

Some people here need to stop, breathe and understand that polarisation has not worked to date, it’s got us where we are. We don’t have to agree all the time but we have to agree to look and work for the future and for a better way of life for as many as possible. If we can’t agree on that, what hope us and our children’s future.

Jeff I am more often than not in moderation and some here believe me to be a paid up member of the Labour Party (which I’m not) so it’s rarely about ideology but something that has triggered their filter. Could be worse, at kiwiblog where I once tried to comment, I never got the notification of username and password to allow me to post. Tried several times, and then thought ” a website that doesn’t want ME!!! What kind of website could THAT be” – (joke)
