    Balance the books sooner ?

Only by doing the usual dodgy accounting. I see they seem to be booking all the earthquake costs in this year yet they probably have only spent $1 Billion so far.

So by the miracle of accounting they will have a $8 Bill ‘improvement’ next year. yet in reality the earthquake costs will be ongoing for at least the next 5 years plus.

Reminds me of Ruth Richardsons great budget swindle of 1991. At the time the cost of permanent disability services ( for IHC and the like) was moved from Social Welfare budget to the Health budget. hey presto a $1 bill saving on welfare costs . She did cut payments to beneficiaries but of course the saving was only peanuts and in the end was sacked by Bolger for her troubles

I thought for a while she would turn up on ACTS list but they are not that crazy -yet.

  2. Oliver I says:

Maybe John was doing something while Phil sat around on Facebook?

4,460 people like Phil Goff, 64,920 like John Key.

  3. ghostwhowalksnz says:

O I, Key was busy unveiling a billboard ! Caught in your trap.

  4. softstarter says:

The fact that updating facebook was a priority for both of them is worrying.

  5. Edwin says:

Well done Trevor for bringing it back away from the real issues he ironically believes are Labour’s focus.

  6. darrenw says:

Seems the Leader of the opposition has more spare time looking at Facebook & twitter. I think he is hoping making obvious statements and showering around hyperbolic empathy rather than doing something or getting the heck out of the way will win votes Truth is he just looks desperate

  7. JamesMeager says:

Key won’t be running his own Facebook fan page..

  8. MrV says:

We’re not going to judge the state of the world via facebook are we?

  9. Mike says:

Aha but who got more Facebook likes??

Brighter Future 1, Tragic Oil Spill 0.

  10. Spud says:

    Oil spill bad :-(

  11. Tigger says:

Come on righties, please show evidence Key is taking responsibility for combating this major disaster. He is the PM. It should be his only mission at the moment. He should be there, now. He gets a fail. Just like Pike River. I’m embarrassed even more by him, something I didn’t think possible.

  12. Jackle says:

And what precautions did Labour have in place for such an occurrence in their 9 years at the helm? None obviously.

  13. Cactus Kate says:

And what did Phil Goff do when he got there? Salvage the ship himself? Save a Penguin?

Nope, got his picture taken and stuck it on Facebook.

  14. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Cactus, Goff didnt salvage the ship but being PM means its his wreck- on TV3 ( nice of him to finally appear after hiding for 6 months). He was taking about ‘ world experts’ needed to be bought in- yeah right , normally they are called ‘the crew’. They would know the fuel system and pumps inside out.

As for facebook Key now has a ‘special edition’ on his page.

I wonder what thats about ?

“I’ve been to Tauranga again this afternoon and I want to give you an update on the situation there.”
Then followed the usual round of backsliding he has been doing for the last week. meanwhile real people – who have been told to ‘stay away from the cleanup’ have just got on with it.

  15. Tracey says:

Neither of them would run their own Facebook pages imo.

I don’t expect the PM to salvage the ship but front the crisis, get his team mobile and communicate from Day One with everyone, so there is understanding and patience. That is NOT the LOO’s job, it’s the PM’s.

“the government didn’t drive the ship onto the reef” sounded whiney. Between the PM, Joyce and Smith, someone needed to be front and centre at the outset. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst, and that includes getting information tot he nation, be it hourly, half daily or whatever. he usually likes press conference…

Precisely because it needed overseas involvement a Govt headed operation would bear more influence.

The Government missed a beat here, and allowed a nation to speculate and get angry when they didn’t need to if they had been educated/informed along the way. Leadership isn’t just about being liked.

Jackie fair comment BUT this Government has been in for nearly 3 years now, and their job was to right the wrongs of the previous administration, wasn’t it. In fact Mr Brownlee, with whom I rarely agree, said the particular vessel for such a situation required serious consideration. he was ignored, so it’s not as if this Government can claim it never even came up.

Perhaps it didn’t accord with their push for oil drilling, to highlight spills?

  16. jennifer says:

I can’t see the whole thing, but has National got an election billboard on ‘rebuilding Christchurch’? Playing politics with a tragic disaster? Say it isn’t so? Can we look forward to the Pike River billboard, ‘get the men out sooner’, and then the M.V. Rena billboard, ‘clean the beach up sooner’? What the hell is wrong with Key?

  17. Tracey says:

The seven hoardings feature the following messages:
    1. Balance The Books Sooner
    2. More Exports, More Real Jobs
    3. Rebuilding Christchurch
    4. Tax And Welfare Incentives For Work
    5. Building Roads, Rail And Fast Broadband
    6. Less Debt And Lower Interest Rates
    7. Staying Strong On Crime

Just a thought, if the economic circumstances are driven by external factors then aren’t the interest rates so driven as well? Number 7 could have read, Getting strong on Serious Domestic Violence (that’s the figure that’s increased recently)

  18. Jeff says:

Interesting that Goff turned up at the beach picked up a shovel (in a way that shows he can’t even do that very well) had a couple of pics taken then went on his way. And you accuse John Key of being a photo oppotunity!!!! Pot Meet Kettle

  19. Alan says:

Interestingly the slogan used by the NACTional party – “towards a brighter future” appears to have come from the same advertising agency being used in the Middle East in support of their census gathering.
One can only conclude that having an original idea is not a strong point in Key’s thinking.

“please show evidence Key is taking responsibility for combating this major disaster. He is the PM. It should be his only mission at the moment. He should be there, now.”

    As always you guys make me laugh;
1)Make up your minds, do you want him MICRO managing every little problem that comes up or sorting out major issues like the economy, education, employment etc?? you just cant please the left.
2)He IS there at the moment…READ the news!

As for the facebook thing… grow up. He will have a PA updating his page, he has more important things to do, unlike Phil.

  21. In Vino Veritas says:

@Alan. One can only conclude? That’d be you as the one since coming to a conclusion like that based on what you have posted is about as long a bow to draw as possible. One would have to conclude that thinking is not your strong point.

  22. Paddy M says:

Seems that the Labour Party are all of a sudden marine salvage experts. Trevor Mallard can’t even ride a bicycle.

  23. Whafe says:

I wouldn’t thing Phil Goff would be to proud of Trevor putting up a thread like this since hearing one East Coast local whom happened to be standing near Goff when his photo was taken… It made interesting listening on ZB this morning…

Trevor, you just made your leader look silly again, not really good hey?

Because it is the PM’s role to sort out this disaster on his own, with his bare hands ;)

  24. indiana says:

    I bet the song running through Phil’s heads was…”everyday I am shoveling…”

  25. Tracey says:

“do you want him MICRO managing every little problem that comes up or sorting out major issues like the economy, education, employment ”

So far the economy is being left to run itself. Education, how is he running education? And since the job summit where they would DO not TALK, nothing’s happened. Still, you might want to speak tot he fisherfolk in the BOP and ask if they consider this a micro issue? What part of leadership don’t some of you get? Of course he doesn’t have to get his hands dirty as a salvage man, but he does have an obligation from DAY ONE to keep the nation informed of the how and when. You guys can wiggle all you like, but the PM and his two Ministers have NOT fronted til the airwaves started exploding.

  26. Marty says:

Well Jeff I didn’t see JK doing anything other than standing around (in a flash suit) talking, smiling and shaking hands.

  27. Steve Barnes says:

    Oliver I says:
“4,460 people like Phil Goff, 64,920 like John Key.”
    Ah but, 20,000,000 liked Ado…..
No, hang on, that would be a Godwin.
