Back Benches this week

Posted by on August 8th, 2011

CHOICE—JUST AROUND THE CORNER?: The filibuster’s been broken so is choice just around the corner? Will the Voluntary Student Membership bill pass? Could this be the death knell of University Student Unions? Or will this separate the wheat from the chaff? And what does it mean for Student media? How important is our student media? Does student radio and magazines need to be separately funded rather than through Student Membership dues?

SAVED!: It was facing cuts up to 60% but the release of the Early Childhood Education Taskforce report means that Playcentre and parent-led ECE services are safe from cuts. But what about other ECE services?

LIVE pub politics from the Backbencher Pub: Wednesday, 10th of August. Our Panel: ACT MP Heather Roy, Green MP Gareth Hughes, Labour MP David Parker, and National MP Amy Adams.

    Go Parker! :-D :-D :-D !

    ECE Victory, :-D , well small victory :-) :-) :-)

VSM is bad for student unions. !

  2. Monty says:

Yes spud VSM will be bad for student unions. Oh dear how sad never mind. Maybe the Student Unions will need to offer value for money when students get choice, there will be accountability. There won’t be the capacity for stupid stunts, and politicking, but rather a focus on core services.. Labour were so out smarted on this, and after watching in the house and the arguments put forward by Trev and granty, and indeed Labour got their just deserts.

  3. Spud says:

Montybear, SAs already give value for money! :-D :-D :-D !
But now students have to find the levy from their own pockets or course costs and the course costs are already too small. :-(

If yer referring to the cage stunt, it was cool! :-D

Labour was smart in house, but did get blindsided by that, :-(

Really, You must have seen something nobody else saw. Public opinion is very much agin ya.

  5. Monty says:

Spud I am referring to silly stunts going back at least 50 years, some pathetic beyond comprehension. Such as sending false death notice letters to families of Viet Nam soldiers, through to silly cage stunts. If students get value for money, then no problem with the SU fee being voluntary then eh? students will sign up for value for money services.

But if they are getting ripped off, then students will stay away. isn’t transparency and accountability a great thing. certainly there will no no money for left wing politicking and that is why Labour are pissed about this bill. To the left this is about the student unions, not e students, and your original comment proved that point.

Next wednesda week it will be great to watch the final passage of the second reading, followed by the third reading a couple of weeks later, and there is nothing Labour will be able to do about it.

  6. Back Benches says:

Please note: Grant Robertson will be stepping in for David Parker this week.

  7. Spud says:

“Such as sending false death notice letters to families of Viet Nam soldiers” – That one is pretty disgusting. :-(

Student stunts these days are in better taste! :-D

Students will have less money to sign up cos it will be coming out of their course costs. :-(

Monty, plenty of rightwingers have been SA presidents and other things! 8O

It will be a sad day, :-(

    @Backbenches – In that case: Go Grant! Yee haa! :-D :-D :-D !
