Red Alert

New Zealand Music Month

Posted by on May 1st, 2011

Its that time of year again, for New Zealand Music Month. Its been another good year for Kiwi music, and judging by the gigs already up on the website, there are loads of opportunities to get out and enjoy and support New Zealand artists this month. Its been launched down in Christchurch today, with the terrific Lawrence of Arabia and others.

I am not going to do a post a day as per last year, but we will be putting up videos throughout the month to celebrate current and past Kiwi artists. As with last year your suggestions are welcome for any bands you would like to see or for us to highlight.

To start with a bit of nostalgia and nationalistic pride (and for May Day there are a few shots of protesting workers) and you might be familiar with this from the telly, but its Minuit, with their song Aotearoa

New Zealand music sucks at the moment. I’m sure I will hear howls of derision and calls of me being an unpatriotic bastard.

It’s true – I am an unpatriotic bastard.

George Washington told us to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism – and that’s what NZ Music Month is – pretended patriotism.

Minuit really suck in particular. The lead singer’s voice is often strained and she attempts to affect a semi-English accent – typical of the NZ cultural cringe. The two “DJ’s” that support her awful voice with a very average kind of Breakbeat-dance music are average at best. The montage that goes with the song is truly insipid.

Other NZ music “artists” that deserve rebuke are…

Annabel Fay…. Your Dad sold our state assets to fund your awful career.

Brooke Fraser…. A happy, clappy christian whose songs make me want to strangle kittens.

Dane Rumble et al…. masquerading as real music. You can’t shine a turd but you can roll it in glitter.

Minuit I like that band. I am sorry I have to disagree with you mr man.

Went to school with Brook fraser though she was in 3rd form when I was in 7th, but remember her preforming at school on stage.

Boh and Bic Runga are both good.

  5. Spud says:

8O Wow, you went to school with Brooke Fraser? :-D

I can’t say that I care for her music, but what a hottie!
    :-D

The Runga sisters have good music :-D

An edit button, ain’t life grand? :-D

What future for NZ music that uses the internet, with the USA working so hard behind the scenes to corrupt the NZ legal system to uphold US copyright monopoly idiocy and cripple the net in NZ to save US corporations?

The US music industry will soon go the way of the dinosaurs.

All we need now is a source of some REALLY great NZ music. Our output has been disappointing.

    How bizarre!
