Red Alert

Bike crash

Posted by Trevor Mallard on March 20th, 2011

Last 36 hours not the best. In Otago and entered the R + R Sport tour, five races over two days.

In the first race I clipped the wheel of another rider and went down doing a bit over 40kph – airborne for a while, came down hard breaking femur just below hip and scapula.

Great support from race officials, St Johns, ED staff (very, too?, busy) surgical team (plate, screws) and acute surgical ward staff. Thanks.

Prognosis not clear, but won’t be meeting with rugby people re stadium (arranged pre ChchII) tomorrow. Lucky to have spent time with David Clark – next Dunedin North MP – Friday night. His 1 year old Amos is unbelievably cute.

Could be good to get enforced planning time.

Take care Trevor and rest up. Whether I agree you that often or not we need guys of your calibre fit and healthy in NZ politics. Get well soon!

On the up side your absence may even let us Tories get a few shots in knowing the oppositions firepower is down on normal :-)

  2. Ed* says:

Bad luck Trevor. The race we really want you to win is later this year anyway.

  3. Damien says:

Just checking the news. This is not necessary Trevor. Every week you have been doing something to keep your profile up, We actually don’t need such events to remember who you are. Hope the prognosis is for a speedy recovery. We need your brains and body to win this next election!!!!

  4. Rob says:

Hope they can fix you up quickly.

  5. Raymon A Francis says:

All the best Trevor. Trying to remember what that prick Muldoon said to Norm Kirk when he was in hospital
It doesn’t apply to you, keep to your bed as ordered and recover, it will take a while.

  6. James Stephenson says:

Yeah, yeah, bones fix themselves. As a fellow cyclist: How’s the bike?

    Get rubber-side down soon.

  7. Nige says:

Hope you are well soon. Enjoy the enforced R & R

  8. Sean says:

All the best for your recovery Trevor. Don’t let the sitting around make you too grumpy.

  9. Spud says:

    Man, :-( , I hope you get well soon. :-( :-( :-( !

  10. salsy says:

Get well Trev, we need you fighting fit on the front line this year!

  11. ianmac says:

Better a broken leg than a broken head Trevor.
Fraid you will probably miss out on All Black selection this year but hey. Maybe next year.

  12. Steve Withers says:

OUCH! A break in the femur is non-trivial. Take care and be sure to give it the time it needs. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  13. Dominoes says:

How awful for you Trevor. Seems cycling has taken its second MP victim, after Nikki Kaye got hobbled last year! Take care and remember the best way to physical recovery is to shut your gob for ten weeks!

  14. fureongo says:

    Hi Trevor

Hope you get well soon and can make as quick a recovery as possible.

Dont over do it though and do what the doctor tells you!!

  15. Trevor Mallard says:

@ Dominoes I will be generous and hope you share my concerns about weight gain if I don’t exercise.

@ James the bike is fine. My friend who lost bike in earlier crash grabbed it and got 4th in our grade notwithstandinding losing 17 min in first race.

  16. Roy Price says:

    Tough luck Trevor!
Still planning for Taupo – a hard ask to get over a broken thigh.
I had a fall in training at the end of Jan and broke a collar bone – kept me off the bike for a month!
Take care and don’t rush your recovery!

  17. Kevin Welsh says:

All the best Trev. As a fellow Roadie, I have seen more accidents than I care to remember. They happen quickly and are never pretty. Get well soon and get back on the bike.

  18. Gary Jones says:

May you not be in too much discomfort and may you have a speedy recovery, Trev.

See you soon in the House via live streaming.

  19. paul says:

Ouch! All the best for fast recovery!! Hope that means we still see you at the nzpf cocktails…

  20. Chris says:

Sorry to hear about the crash, I am a bit of a cycling fan so my sympathy goes out to you! Take it easy mate :)

  21. Olwyn says:

Sorry to hear about your crash, and I hope that your recovery is quick and not too unpleasant. We need your challenging voice back in parliament. In the meantime, I hope you have something good to read.

  22. Spud says:

    Poor Trev :-(

  23. Ben says:

Highlanders Game / Hyde Street Keg party was probably the reason for the busy ED

  24. Ben says:

    Hope you get better soon

  25. Trevor Mallard says:

@ Ben. I was in Sat morning – can’t blame party or rugby for that ? Thanks for wishes though.

  26. Monty says:

Trev, I know what a broken femur is like having had a massive compound fratcure of the same in 1982 on my motorbike. I hope recovery is swift and painless. The only thing I know fear is a very grumpy Trev. You once said if you don’t get on you bike every few days you get grumpy – god knows what you’ll be like after a few months. I suspect even your caucus will watch out for you after a few days.

  27. Spud says:

    @Monty – you a bikie? :-D
A grumpy Trev, and I’m not wishing that on him, might get fired up to shred some tories! :-)

  28. paul says:

aww M, I think you are secretly a big fan of Trevs – you are right tho – a grumpy trev is a force to be ducking from…

  29. Trevor Mallard says:

    @Monty chanNelling

  30. Monty says:

@Trev, channeling will not help your team. Even the sympathy vote you will now enjoy will not help.
Spud, yes a keen motorbike rider in my youth, but these days more likely to be my mountain bike. I just hope I don’t end up in hospital let alone being next to Trev. So I ride carefully.

@Paul as far as labour MPs go Trev is probably one of the better ones, but I would rather drink a bucket of cold vomit rather than vote Labour. (can’t vote for him as I moved away from the Hutt Valley in 1983 so have to put up with Grantie instead)

  31. Trevor Mallard says:

@Monty – every bit helps, % by %, seat by seat, policy by policy.

And given your views I’m pleased we don’t attract your vote.

  32. Spud says:

“I just hope I don’t end up in hospital let alone being next to Trev.” LOL :-D Now that would be funny, :-D , who would crack up first? :-D

“but I would rather drink a bucket of cold vomit rather than vote Labour.” I would pay to see that! :-D

  33. Peter Freedman says:

    Hi Trevor,

Sorry to hear you are laid up, hope you are soon better and back in the fray.

PS: Maggie from Kiwiblog also wishes you well.

  34. A Mother says:

Doesn’t sound nice. Get better soon Trev.
