Barry thinks she has it in the bag

Posted by on January 27th, 2011

Maggie Barry hasn’t got the Botany selection yet. Notwithstanding her endorsement by John Key she is way behind in the race.

Why then was she having the studio photoshoot for her campaign material done in Grey Lynn yesterday ?

I think Maggie on the National Party back bench would like Steele, Thorne, Blumsky and others, continue a tradition of mediocre members who didn’t live up to their reputations from previous lives.

So I support her selection – as long as it is done in a fair and democratic way.

Shes a public well known figure and prob well liked face though and wont be easy to go up against I would not think – still, likely to get in due to her public profile – guess the PR team are behind it.

Bit saddened to see her as a torrie. You just never can tell these days.

Maggie Barry walks in off the street – as it were – without any of the knowledge and experience that comes from moving up the ranks. As Trevor Mallard has said, she will be a mediocre member who sits in the chamber doing the patsy thing. At least she will be a change from all the blondes :D

  3. Whaleoil says:

John Key hasn’t endorsed her or anyone else.

Still you have to wonder why someone who is passionate about [insert electorate] is having her photos taken in Grey Lynn.

I wonder of Nikki Kaye should be nervous? Or Melissa Lee?

  4. Anton says:

Bring her nomination on. Worst case scenario is that she becomes an ineffective MP – ineffective because who the hell’s going to listen to her?

  5. Anton says:

@Paul – Barry has shown her colours on a number of occasions recently by the way she’s conducted interviews, particularly when the topic’s been the attacks on welfare. As with Joanne Black’s article in the Listener on Paula Rebstock and the so-called welfare working group, she’s infuses genuine political naivety into her journalism. Maybe Joanne Black could stand for the tories? Or perhaps ACT? It’d be a match made in heaven, not to mention the humour it’d bring.

So we are supposed to believe Trevor’s “inside information” on who is being supported by the National hierarchy for Botany!

  7. Trevor Mallard says:

No rely on Maggie. I take her at her word. She said Key asked her to run.

  8. LabRat says:

“ineffective because who the hell’s going to listen to her?”
Old folks love listening to her (as I understand it). I suspect Key likes her as a foil to the Winston man.

But if iPredict is anything to go by, she’s not getting the nod.

There are some who think the selection of Kris Faafoi was not done in a fair and democratic way. But I guess that is different as he is Labour?
Personally, I think she should stick to her gardening and leave it to someone who has some history in politics.

    Gone for abusing me. Trevor

  11. paul says:

Chris has a political background – not the same can be said of Maggie – not that a political background is the be all and end all of course.

Jami-Lee Ross has been selected by National.

    First question for Mr Ross:

Why did you claim expenses for attending an ANZAC Day ceremony, when you were a Manukau city councillor? Do you think ANZAC Day is about paying your respects, or getting paid? Is that how you intend to treat taxpayers’ money, if you are elected as the MP for Botany?

  13. Mark says:

    Very good post “Old Sammy”.
The Nats clearly value those that take any opportunity to line their pockets.

  14. Maryan Street says:

Well well. Maggie wasn’t selected. That will be a bit of a shock for her. I am sure she wouldn’t have declared her politics so publicly if she had not been given the nod from on high. Now she has queered her pitch as a non-aligned journo for some time. She’ll be a bit sore about that. Oh well. She’ll still have plenty of friends. She came to dinner at my place once but that was at least two lifetimes ago. I wouldn’t have called her for a Nat but people change. I still have a lot of time for her other skills.

I can’t help but laugh at the “fair and democratic” comment. Labour just parachutes party loyalists in anywhere, Kris Fa’afoi is a good example. The only democratic piece in the whole selection process is running it by the unions to see if they’re cool with it.

  16. George says:

Louis – I believe that when they use the term ‘democratic’ on the Left they use in the same way as they did when they named East Germany ‘The German Democratic Republic’.

  17. Trevor Mallard says:

Yeah right guys – Kris won the floor vote of hundreds of members – whereas the National Party head office would not let their members consider seven of the twelve nominees. Who is democratic ?

  18. Anne says:

Y’know, when they use the term ‘democratic’ on the Right, they use it in the same way as they did when they named East Germany ‘The German Democratic Republic’.

  19. Theo Steel says:

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Sorry Trevor, that was one of the funniest posts ever. Especially considering the (democratic) outcome.

  20. Colonial Viper says:

I think Theo just made Anne’s point perfectly.
