Got contacted tonight re Queensland floods from a friend in Melbourne who is helping coordinate a relief effort, to say that there’s a serious shortage of mosquito nets, coils and repellent in Australia. And in particular, gumboots and waders.
Well not sure about our capacity for mosquito stuff, but surely us Kiwis can do gumboots.
How do we get gumboots, and then get them to Oz quicksmart?
Gumboots – Mr Tindall.
Getting there – Mr Fyfe.
Do Skellerup still make their gumboots in NZ ?
Secure a known chain store, supermarket or rural supply store to act as local collection points, a freight forwarder or other sponsor for transport from collection points and to Queensland, call for volunteers to bag ‘em and tag ‘em for size and put the word out.
“If it weren’t for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You’d be in the hospital or infirmary
‘coz you would have a dose of the ‘flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn’t have yer feet in yer gumboots.”
Or an airline, Virgin or Air NZ, Qantas or any other to put on a plane with a cargo of relief gumboots and other gear necessary.
Thanks for info I’ve received. Am currently in discussion with big chain around how to source large quantities of gumboots. Not the season for them so it’s not as easy as it seems.
Operation Angel, which coordinated a relief effort in the Victorian bushfires two years ago is coordinating a recovery effort in Toowomba, in Queensland. The problems are massive, the relief need is huge.
Australia has very limited stocks of gumboots, and as you can imagine, they will be a necessary item during the clean-up.
Plus mosquito issues will also be severe.
Will keep purusing the leads and give you an update later.
Perhaps we could send some flood protection engineers so they can prevent these floods constantly reoccurring, in return they could send some mine safety engineers.
Had extraordinary response from The Warehouse today. And from AirNZ. Think we’ve sourced a bunch of gumboots. Still need mosquito nets, coils, repellent etc…
Good old kiwis
Will update when I know more
Try spotlight or bed, bath and beyond for the mossie nets.
Try Kathmandu to see if they will sponsor the mossie repellant? Or a large chemist chain?
The Warehouse has sourced 1600 pairs of gumboots. They’ll be ready to go to Qld tomorrow. having difficulty working out how to get them there. There is a well roganised operation at the other end to collect them, take them to where they ened to be (in Toowomba) and distribute them. Will post more about this tomorrow. Have more work to do.
Big thanks to The Warehouse.
