Not sure that as sad as the Pike River deaths are, it is not really a good reason to suspend Parliament, is it?
Even if it gets me banned (again) I absolutely have to say that ianmac is a real freaking tosser (to be polite).
RIP the 29 miners and let us think of the families today.
I haven’t deleted your comment johnbt and I hope ianmac can cope. Emotions are high. Let’s not argue with each other about it. Not today anyway. Clare
I’d rather you did what the boys would’ve done and got on with the job, frankly.
I dont agree with the stop work action by Parliament either. Different if you were all attending a service, maybe, but really???
For God’s sake ianmac, AJ and tracey. Some things are more important than a bunch of politicians farting on about pointless stuff.
“uhhh…Mr. Speaker…uhhh, the honourable MP for…uhhh…is…uhhh…incorrect in his…uhhh…assessment of the…uhhh…level of toxicity in apple sticker…uhhh…adhesive…”
Yeah, 29 New Zealanders are dead. More important that more of ^^^ that, at them moment.
I too disagree with this. Get on with the job, as hard as it is. A few minutes respectful silence would no doubt be appreciated and of course now isn’t the time for anyone to point fingers, but other than that, get on with the job. We are a respectful nation, but we are also a strong nation. We can handle this without halting all work.
I just want to jump to ianmac’s defence, he was only expressing an opinion
I don’t mind Red Alert being suspended, I’m going out drinking anyway.
I think the tragedy deserves some respect and I don’t mind that the MPs chose this way of showing it.
Good grief!!
We will now have another urgency session before Xmas and all MPs will be moaning about extra hard work they have do.
Again.
MPs jobs are already done mostly behind closed doors. The population can deal without them telling them what they are doing for one days so they can focus their attentions on the Pike River misfortune instead. It is good of Parliament to show that they care and frankly they will get more done not being in Parliament today because it would be inappropriate to carry on the usual antics.
Kia kaha to all the families and the communities who are dealing with this tragedy.
If by “Parliament suspended” you mean the debate in the chamber was suspended, I have no problem. I took parliament is suspended to mean the building went home (as it were).
Mr. Infinity, about 100 people die each year in work related injuries/accidents, that you choose to mourn only this one says more about you than me. That more people die in workplaces than are murdered has concerned me for years and I have expressed the thought many times here, so please dont presume some self righteous hold on mourning and grieving because your attention has been caught by this one. You will go back to your life, whatever that entails and leave it to others to deal with this and other deaths in the workplace while others will continue to fight for safer workplaces for all.
Has Parliament suspended itself before in its history, as a response to a disaster? We have had a few…planes, boats…wars.
Thank-you Phil for the opportunity to listen to Annette’s speech. She did indeed do us proud.
Never Peter. That is a worry.
Annette is great, Anne
I am always amazed that we never have a day of mourning in NZ when events like this occur. In my opinion we should have had one when Sir Ed died. So no day for us but Parliament can stop.
