John Key said that TVNZ should take some responsibility for Henry’s comments because they encouraged his shock – jock approach. Others agree with Key and say that moving to a pure commercial approach makes this worse.

Agree that it was partly TVNZ’s fault by encouraging him. But isn’t it then by extension partly the govt’s fault for messing with the charter and sending the message that the values in it aren’t important?

  2. d14 says:

    >message that the values in it aren’t important
AND the need to make a dividend for the govt.

  3. Colonial Viper says:

AND the need to make a dividend for the govt.

And in particular, signalling to TVNZ that they would be allowed to behave like any other large scale corporate to maximise their profits at (virtually) ANY COST to the country.

Up to and including diplomatic and trade relations with a regional super power.

  4. Spud says:

Yep, Henry has been doing this kind of thing for years and TVNZ have done nothing. I think this is why he stepped way over the line, because he just got too comfortable in his job and did it without thinking. 8O

  5. Boss Hogg says:

Hopefully somebody will write to TVNZ to complain about the PM’s pathetic performance on ‘This Is Your Life’ last night.
The guy is supposed to be statesman-like, not a wannabe stand-up comedian.

  6. Victor says:

I agree that TVNZ is partially responsible for this ugly business. But this in no way mitigates Henry’s guilt, just as Henry’s guilt in no way mitigates the unseemly and cowardly glee of his many fans whenever he put the boot in to yet another victim and just as none of that mitgates Key’s guilt for his woefully inadequate response.

  7. John W says:

Key may not have got a grip on the difference between Revenue and Principle, the latter controlling the former as well as not being expediential.

Revenue without principle is a common banker’s position.
    We all pay.

  8. Red under the Bed says:

I will say Henry’s fault, since no one actually told him to do it. He did this on his own accord but TVNZ put him on TV and knew he was trouble, this was only a matter of time. So they should flag some of the blames as well.

Can’t blame national for this as Paul been on TV a long time, and under labour but doesn’t help national messing around with the TV charter.

  9. bbfloyd says:

i would consider it a close call between tvnz pandering to the lowest common denominator, and stanley keys vacuous, giggling non response.. what a chump! had a perfect opportunity to show some real substance, and failed miserably…

  10. the sprout says:

You only have to look at TVNZ’s continual defences of Henry in the multiple BSA complaints – invariably along the lines of “light-hearted, not meant to offend, saying what we all think, robust debate…etc” – to see that Henry’s bigotry was repeatedly condoned and encouraged by TVNZ management.
