Latest Updates: Christchurch Earthquake" (translated from Chinese). From 4 September, major Chinese-language media in Auckland have created special pages to keep the Chinese communities home and abroad posted.

The major Auckland-based Chinese media have jointly launched a “Rebuilding” fund to assist in the aftermath of the Canturbury Earthquake.

We intend to utilise our networks in the NZ Chinese Community to help as many of the affected people as we can.

There needn’t be much said about why we want to assist these people. They are all our neighbours.

Jerry Wen Yang, Chief Editor of The United Chinese Press, summarised the perspective of some of the newer New Zealanders:

“Many of us did not undergo the ardours of the pioneering experience, did not sweat to erect cities that now stand by the beaches… This time around, we encounter a rare opportunity for us to return a favour to the country that took us in, and say ‘Ta’ to the New Zealanders who have treated us so generously.”

I feel humbled that these media organisations have asked me to assist them with this drive. I have maintained regular contact with the Chinese communities in Christchurch, and I am very impressed with their life stories.

For more information about how to contribute to this fund please see the Media Release here.

  2. Dylan says:

Thanks Raymond, a good effort from our good friends the chinese

  3. Simon says:

Haaahaha. Just as long as they’re not buying any land. Isn’t that right Spud?

  4. Spud says:

Hey moola good :-D If they are NZ PERMANENT residents or born here and the profits are benefiting our country then they can buy our land. :-D If they are donating to the quake but are living in China then let’s take their money! :-D

Simon says: at 10:39pm that “Haaahaha. Just as long as they’re not buying any land. Isn’t that right Spud?”

Have you read the NZ Herald editorial of Sept 7? Relevant paragraps copied here:

“Among other things, a group called Save the Farms has sprung into being. It wants the Government to stop any sales until the country has had a robust public debate.

The group says it is ‘not a xenophobic organisation’. If so, why was it silent last week when an American billionaire, William P. Foley II, was cleared by the Overseas Investment Office to buy Wharekauhau, an exclusive 2023ha Wairarapa country estate and farming business?

And why did its organisers say nothing as Britons, Italians, Americans, Israelis and Australians bought the bulk of more than 150,000 hectares of New Zealand farm land – almost the size of Stewart Island – over the past five years? During that period, China hardly registered as a source of foreign investment.

Now, however, its first major foray has hit a wave of resistance.

Those who have been buying the vast majority of New Zealand’s farm land are distinguished by two characteristics. They are English-speaking and they are non-Asian. As Mr Williamson noted, ‘if you look different, you’re a foreigner but if you come from the other side of the world, from Scotland, then you’re not’.

He could, and perhaps should, have added that the laws on overseas investment make no such ethnic distinction. They are colour-blind, and must remain so…”

Simon: If you are anti-Chinese or anti-migrants (non-English speaking ones), just say so. At least Maurice Williamson is probably surfing Kiwiblog, not Red Alert. So you are pretty safe.

  6. Spud says:

I didn’t even hear about those other purchases! 8O I think the China thing has more publicity so therefore gets more focus. 8O The Crafers are pretty high profile what with their pollution and what not.

Oh, it’s over the past five years, yeah I’ve only recently been paying attention to this so didn’t really notice 8O

Simon was referring to stuff that I’ve been saying for months about not wanting our farm land to go to China – he was making a joke at me – if you want to be angry at anyone then you should be firing at me! 8O

  7. DeepRed says:

And what of the inconsistency between Minister Williamson’s Muslim jokes and his complaints about Sinophobia?

  8. John W says:

Offshore or visitor land purchases push up prices and make it harder for residents who wish to occupy and use land or housing. Long term aggregation of sovereignty loss is crazy. Most countries would not allow it. Why are we being so short sighted.

When Offshore corporates or investors are doing the business then it makes headlines when exposed.

NZ will deeply regret the opening up sales to non residents. It makes no sense except to a seller with no regard for the home community. Land agents certainly have no ethics but neither do many other parasites including banks.

The appeal by NZs Chinese leaders is commendable and has great sense of community.

  9. Loota says:

Who knows if the latest bruhaha has a racist ‘yellow peril’ tinge to it or not. I am simply glad that it has brought focus on to what NZ intends to do with its ownership of productive assets and made more NZ’ers consider issues of economic sovereignty and national income.

If foreign interests own a productive asset then the profit that asset makes does not stay in the country to increase wealth and living standards here, it is shipped off to increase the wealth and living standards of foreign shareholders.

Frak it, this isn’t really rocket science is it.

    Hi,
Is this fundraising effort still happening? I’ve love to advertise it on my website http://www.christchurchmoversandshakers.com. It’s a website for Cantabrians affected by the quakes. It sounds like a great project!
