There is a lot of debate around South Canterbury Finance, especially the role of the government which some see as positive and others negative.
One thing that is clear is that there is from some quarters more opinion than facts. In order to add a little to Parliament’s information I obtained and attempted to table the four Crown Deeds of Guarantee between the Minister of Finance (signed for him by the Treasury Secretary) and South Canterbury Finance Ltd.
I was very surprised when the local member Jo Goodhew objected to them being tabled. These are not secret documents but have not been widely circulated. I have no idea what she is trying to hide or whether she thinks she can protect the Minister of Finance. Because any member can object I couldn’t table them. Jo Goodhew was the only person who did object.
So for those who want to have a look here is the original deed form Nov 2008, the second deed from December 2009, the third deed from April 2010, and the supplemental deed from June 2010.
Some things should be secret but I can think of no good reason to hide these.
That’s funny I recall finding them on the Treasury website and posting them on my blog. Not exactly state secrets.

Was Goodhew a sacrificial bunt? Unusual.
Yep and I did credit you in the House today, along with Hickey and O’Sullivan. But please don’t do a vanity post because my friends won’t talk to me again. Then again……
Argh!
Badhew Grrrr
Hi Trev and Kate
!
I wanted to participate in today’s debate but am in ChCh responding to my constituents who ahve been affected by the earthquake. I am gobsmacked that Jo Goodhew would object to the tabling of these documents other than to draw attention to their significance – it is significant that the terms changed and that the government has re-invented their interpretation of the eligibility rules just for now (and the past) to suit their approach. There are questions that need to be answered!
Thanks Trevor,
I will have a look through these some time, but not now, cause I can’t be stuffed.
I find it odd that Jo Goodhew objected to them being here?
Along with Hickey and O’Sullivan include Brian Gaynor. He also been at Hubbard but the trick is he got shares in SCF is benefiting from it downfall.

And it turns out Simon Botherway is now under
investigation for his conflict of interest in relation to Allan Hubbard.
Your questions in the House were measured and disturbing. Well done Trevor. The answers might be very disturbing. We will see.
Good on you Lianne
Hi Red
Hi Ianmac
Early warning signs reviewed here

I am astounded at the lack of transparency .. why stop the tabling of such documents???
seems trevor you still don’t understand the rules that things that are widely available aren’t allowed to be tabled. Seems you don’t understand either that SCF was paid out under the deal that your government put together, and that your government didn’t do the work to find out they were already in immense financial trouble before you did that. Just typical Trevor Mallard bully tactics.
Richard I do understand the rules very well as does the Speaker – the documents while available have not been widely circulated – and therefore he put the tabling leave.
Probably couldn’t table now because the hits on this site and Cactus Kate shows they are now much more widely read.
Poor old double dipping Bill English was the Minister when SCF signed up. He is the Minister on all the documentation. He is the one who let them in, renewed and extended SCF.
And it might just be the final nail in a not too flash career. The worst election result ever for Nats when he was leader, total loss of personal credibility over the pretence that Dipton was his primary place of residence that lead to over 500k of benefit to him and his whanau, and now this series of errors that will end up costing the taxpayer at least $300m more than necessary.
No I don’t feel sorry for him.
I wish members were required to give a reason for objecting to docs being tabled
@Trevor Mallard
lol, I doubt his career is over. I think any who voted for national last election was voting for John Key, not Bill English.
That’s a bit harsh, poor old bill
Out of interest, who would be finance minister if Bling werent, would JK step up?
Scary thought
@tracey
Key like Muldoon. Muldoon could stand the heat. Key could never stand the heat. Mind you muldoon wasn’t a wuss like Key.
Balance deleted Trevor
Night Red
Yawn
@Tracey: Would Merrill Lynch branches be the new Polish shipyards? With apologies to the late David Lange, “the country can’t continue to be run like a Merrill Lynch Branch.”
LOL
Now that the Gummint owns SCF do we have the right to do an OIA on who the foreign investors are who are getting the 20m not covered by the gummint guarantee?
