Income Splitting verdict from Brian Fallow

Posted by Stuart Nash on September 2nd, 2010

Brian Fallow’s verdict on Peter Dunne’s income splitting idea in today’s Herald… “Unfair, unaffordable and unlikely to happen”

He concludes with the following “And at a time when [National's] policy is to encourage welfare beneficiaries into the workforce it would find it hard to justify dispensing middle-class welfare to make it easier for the partners of the well-paid to stay home”

Says it all really.

Family who qualifies for WFF earing $100k, if one income vs 2x$50k there is a $8,450 difference in disposable income, but thanks to govts policy both get the same WFF payouts, even though 1 has to survive of this $8.45k less.
Or can you, Charles/Stuart put a case forward why a single income family has to survive re the case above on $8.45k less than a 2 family, and still both are poor enough to get the same WFF payment?
Why will no one who is against this policy state why the same family structure should be able to live on this reduced $8,450k? Or is it just to hard for everyone, so we use the envy retaliation to close this down?
p.s. Stuart if $100k is the income of the rich and famous why does it still qualify for govt assistance, or back when Lab was in power the $60k top tax rate when WFF was implemented?

That’s ok, the money put aside for this has already been income split. Down to Timaru.

i hope he is right.. I’m not sure there is enough political capital left to spend on something as superfluous as this.

can never be sure with this lot(nat) though, when you think back on what they HAVE done.
