Will John Boscawen tell us what his first car was?

Posted by on August 26th, 2010

The Hon John Boscawen is taking his first piece of legislation through the House. It’s the Committee stage and third reading of the MotorVehicle Sales Amendment Bill, being considered under urgency.

The last stage of this Bill was under urgency too. Hmmm A couple of months ago. Very urgent!

I used that last speech to muse about the importance of making a car purchase. In particular my first car. He was a 1948 Morris 10, named Maurice and cost $125. it sparked a flurry of reminisecences from MPs and other commenters on their first cars.

We await with interest hearing what John Boscawen’s first car was.

He can’t remember the car, but the chauffeur was called James.

  2. Spud says:

How is that urgent? Shouldn’t parliament’s urgency be used for important bills? This sucks! :x

  3. Clare Curran says:

It’s great that lots of MPs are now telling the House about their first cars.

  4. Phil says:

You only need look back at that thread to see why the private motor vehicle was, is, and always will be, the primary mode of transportation for a developed society.

No-one is ever going to fondly remember their first bus ride.

For the record, my first and only car is a 1994 Nissan NXR, 2-dr coupe with removable roof panels.

I firmly believe you can’t be a “car person” until you’ve driven topless.

  5. Dave says:

We can assume that, whatever his first car was, it was bought with his parents’ money. Just like that Kmart.

See http://theegonomist.co.nz/?p=964 for our thoughts on Boscawen

  6. Sean says:

It’s urgent again? How many bills is the nation going to have which have not been properly debated?

The Leader of the House’s record on shutting down parliamentary debate through urgency would leave Muldoon green with envy.

Feel free to decline that dare Clare. This is a family show.

  8. pat says:

    My guesses are:

Boscawen’s first vehicle was a coal powered.

For Garret is was a horse, it responded well to a sound whipping.

    Hide had a bulldozer.

Roy had an Alfa Romeo, attractive but temperamental, didn’t always perform as expected.

Douglas had a chariot pulled by worthless, disposable peasants that were lucky to have the privilege of pulling it.

  9. jennifer says:

Boscawen’s car was a Reliant Robin, or was it just a metaphor for the ACT party?

  10. “No-one is ever going to fondly remember their first bus ride.”

Could that be because a bus ride last a few minutes and your fist car a few years..?

The abuse of urgency this term has been a disgrace – very undemocratic… Palriamentary rules need to be changed it leads to bad laws we don’t want…

  11. Spud says:

    @Pat ROTFL :-D

  12. pdm says:

Pat said – `Douglas had a chariot pulled by useless peasnats’ or words to that effect.

Pat overlooks the fact that at that time Roger Douglas was Labour to the core.

  13. Alwyn says:

Oh well. Our previous Prime Minister, anyone remember her, would have stolen her line from the film Pretty Woman, when Richard Geer announced that his first car was a Limousine.
Wasn’t it Helen who said, when it was proposed that the taxpayer could save a lot of money by using Taxi’s rather than the Limo’s proclaimed that there was no way that SHE was going to ride in a taxi.

  14. Spud says:

I await the day that Alwyn and Olwyn face off 8O

  15. Tracey says:

Phil, most New York City dwellers dont own a car… many parisiens dont own a car, I guess they are not part of developed society ;)

  16. Clare Curran says:

Don’t think I’ve ever driven “topless”. Is that one of the things you shoudl do in your lifetime?

  17. Diane says:

Just for you all to know – I worked with John Boscawen in the 70′s and I can assure you that he did not drive a posh car, it was not bought by his parents (neither was KMart)and he was one of the hardest working and genuine person I have ever met and still is.
Please don’t assume that all politicians get there because of their parents wealth.

That wasn’t the implication. We genuinely wanted to know. Most people have a good story to tell about their first car. Clare

I was refering to what the post by “Dave” said
