  1. Oliver says:

Sorry what did the Auditor General find?

  2. pdm says:

Whatever the answer is it is not as much as Jim Anderton taking the leaders allowance for a party of one.

  3. Loota says:

The Double Dipper from Dipton. Running the country’s finances into the ground. I guess he feels a need to do his personal share.

  4. Trevor Mallard says:

@ Oliver – relied on his word too.

  5. Trevor Mallard says:

    @pdm nope u r wrong

  6. Spud says:

    $145,000???? 8O

  7. Trevor Mallard says:

Cmon Spud you must know it is more than that

  8. Spud says:

    :o !!! Well I’ll be bleeped! 8O

  9. Monty says:

What a sad nasty person you are Trevor.

  10. Grant says:

Did he break the law? Tell the police. Did break parliament rules? Complain to the speaker.

Otherwise get a life- and here’s a thought…try offering real leadership to the country instead of this crap.

  11. Michael says:

Multiple Speakers of the House – including your own Margaret Wilson – supported these arrangements. And Mr Mallard knows this. The hypocrisy in this post shows why you are unfit to hold office – and why you will lose at least the next election.

    No integrity.

I suspect you’ll delete this post but I’m glad at least of you has to read it and consider what you’re deleting. Is this the type of political party you want to put your name next to?

  12. Sean says:

Bill English is collection $500,000 and counting, from the taxpayer, for living in his own home, in the City where both he and his wife work, and his kids were and are being raised for the last twenty years.

The only time Bill English has lived in Dipton in any meaningful sense in the last thirty years was for some months in 1987, when he went unsuccessfully for selection as the National party representative of Wallace, which was the only election struggle of any value in that electorate, which had returned National MPs steady since 1938. And then again between 1989, when he was selected as the National party representative for Wallace, and 1990 when he was inevitably elected in that Blue Ribbon electorate.

At that point, Bill English returned to Wellington, where he had previously studied, worked and been President of the Lyall Bay National Party committee.

How did the Auditor General reconcile the way Bill English claimed to have not been a Wellington resident for his housing allowance, yet managed to claim to be a Wellington resident for a vehicle allowance (in his favour) Trevor?

  13. Oliver says:

Didn’t labour just send out some misleading junkmail to the tune of $500,000?

  14. Spud says:

Sounds like a rort to me! 8O

  15. mikey says:

bloody hell trevor, can we really go this low?

  16. mikey says:

this will take a bit of defending trev.

  17. The Lone Haraunger says:

    Deleted. Offensive and defamatory. Clare

  18. Tigger says:

Monty – actually exposing this sort of behaviour is neither sad nor nasty. It’s warranted and it’s fair.

  19. rjs131 says:

So Mr Mallard you will be expecting to win this seat off Bill English in a landslide since you seem obsessed with the fact he doesnt reside in Dipton. Why dont you put your money where your mouth is. Is the Labor going to put up a decent candidate, or didnt its candidate actually live in Dunedin and stand against Clare Curran as a candidate for her seat?

  20. Draco T Bastard says:

Multiple Speakers of the House – including your own Margaret Wilson – supported these arrangements.

Yes they did – doesn’t mean that such corruption should continue.

  21. Dorothy says:

the gentleman’s agreement whereby speakers and parliamentary officials rubber-stamped MPs’ expense dates from the 19th century when questioning someone’s word was a matter of honour. Time to drag the whole business into the 21st century where the rest of us have to provide proof and authorisations for all spending!

  22. bbfloyd says:

wow!!!really hit a nerve there. havn’t seen so much frothing and gnashing since i saw that film on rabies.

  23. John W says:

Bill English is setting a standard. A moral high point in the circles he represents.

He is not a banker even.

And does not commit massive fraud of autographing an artwork.

  24. pdm says:

Tigger said – exposing this is neither sad or nasty, or words to that effect.

On that basis what about the $158,000 defamatory deleted – into moderation Trevor

  25. mark m says:

    monty

    Trevor Sad and Nasty?

thats a bit harsh , you need to understand Trevors under pressure .
He will be looking for a job next year and isnt that well qualified.
At least with the 90 day bill someones bound to give him a trial.

  26. Trevor Mallard says:

@ mark 90 day rule doesn’t apply in Cabinet – constant review. At least for us – clearly doesn’t apply for Nact.

  27. Trevor Mallard says:

@ rjs – isn’t Bill English one of our best assets.

  28. I believe it’s morally wrong to claim housing allowances for living in your own home, regardless of how its juggled into trusts etc.

Its a rort, we all know it

  29. Simon says:

Saturday poll: Is there any real appetite for MPs to change the rules to stop ‘double dipping’ or any perceived ‘hand in till’ activities?

    a/ None whatsoever
b/ Some, depends on how much political gain from media coverage can be obtained
c/ Lots of consensus, but only from minority parties
d/ Across the board backing from all parties and all MPs

  30. ghostwhowalksnz says:

As to what the Auditor generals investigation found:

” Ministerial Services decided it would rent the property if Mr English did not have a financial interest in the family trust.”

“We consider that Mr English does have an indirect financial interest in the trust.”

At Mr English’s request, the rental agreement between Ministerial Services and the trust has now ended. Mr English has reimbursed the rent and other costs that had been paid”

Its pretty clear he was “ripping off the system” and when caught out paid it back

  31. peter says:

Go for the jugular Trevor, These born to rule NACTS really are an apalling bunch.

  32. Hayden Peake says:

Wow. @ghostwhowalksnz made the only comment worth reading on this post. Not often we agree.

  33. Cnr Joe says:

Lord Blinglish of DoubleDipton is in a bit of a bind innee?
If he stops the purported rort now it would be admitting that a rort has been occurring.
@ Trvr Mllrd – Bill’s one of your best assets! heh

  34. Tracey says:

For those who think nothing of this, and there seem to be a few, how do you reconcile that stance/view with National’s vilification of Clark for what was essentially a row between Winny and GLenny? Did you think all those nat and Act people who raged over this for months needed to get a life or did you vote for them?

  35. Jeremy M Harris says:

Cut him a break, he obvious is in need of a benefit, it’s not cheap living in Karori even balance deleted – please leave families out Trevor

  36. Spud says:

    Ha ha ha

  37. paul says:

oh my goodness – have you noticed how the NACT supporters come screaming out of hiding to ‘defend’ the NACT mps for appalling behavior – attacking Trev etc for highlighting this issue, each time, without offering any real reasons or evidence to support why they think Bill is innocent ? I understand its been sort of dealt with – but like the hollow men – kiwis forget so quickly and it does not hurt to keep reminding them (esp those that appear to be so misguided that they actually think that Bill was right to do what he did).

  38. Wendy says:

Everyone in Southland knows that Bill English has not lived in Dipton since 1993 (being generous there). Generally accepted that parliamentary life is hard on families, so some understanding of why whole family moved to Wellington. However, Assumption was that when he moved whole family to Wellington permanently he had stopped claiming any allowance for his ‘home’ being in Dipton. Great shock in Southland when it was revealed that he has been claiming all this time. That must be over $20.000 p.a. for all those years – not just the $43,000 or so revealed since he became a Minister in Nov. 2008; but 100′s of thousands. Leaves him with no credibility as a Finance Minister, or as a person.
Considering that earlier Ministers (Bunkle & Hobbs) lost Ministerial positions over a very similar (but much shorter) issue, and the fuss National caused over that, I think it is perfectly reasonable that the full extent of English’s word maybe defamatory removed Trevor is revealed. So many people are unaware (still) of how long the rort has gone on.
True Blue Nats of Clutha-Southland will still vote for him no doubt, but they should know exactly the cut of the man they are voting for, & perhaps the 2011 result will be closer to his worst-ever result in 2002.

  39. Spud says:

“Everyone in Southland knows that Bill English has not lived in Dipton since 1993″ :o … he lied to me :-(

“perhaps the 2011 result will be closer to his worst-ever result in 2002.” :-D

  40. paul says:

I think they (Nacts) could run a monkey in that electorate and southlanders who are true blue will support it just to spite the Lab supporters…if however Lab actually ran a solid and well thought of southlander with bit of passion and charisma (nothing wrong with Lesley mind) – then I think they could take it. Be tough, but possible, but cant remember when lab tried that tact.

  41. paul says:

ps given the current Nat MP for sthlnd – my bad for insulting monkeys

  42. DeepRed says:

@paul. Too true. The whole point of this post is that when supporters of the Key-Hide Govt gloat about putting the Great Political Blowtorch on their opponents, only to find it being blown back on them, they’ll threaten to declare DEFCON 1 and reach for the Big Red Launch Button.

  43. Spud says:

    @paul LOL :-D

  44. Loota says:

if however Lab actually ran a solid and well thought of southlander with bit of passion and charisma (nothing wrong with Lesley mind) – then I think they could take it. Be tough, but possible, but cant remember when lab tried that tact.

remember what Labour got in 2008 in that electorate? Somewhere in the 20-25% range, both electoral and party vote, IIRC. Optimism is good but those aren’t rolling green hills down there, they are rolling BLUE hills.
