Old fashioned employers

Posted by Trevor Mallard on August 9th, 2010

John Key seems to want to take the law back to favour old fashioned employers like those in this link.

These are a few of the lines which he no doubt wants us to hear more of.

“Idle conversation and gossip in this office among employees will result in immediate termination. Don’t talk about other people and other things in this office. DO YOUR JOB AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!”

“Do not speak to me when you see me. If I want to speak to you, I will do so. I want to save my throat. I don’t want to ruin it by saying hello to all of you sons-of-bitches.”

“Per Edward Mike Davis’ orders, there will be no more birthday celebrations, birthday cakes, levity, or celebrations of any kind within the office.”

Actually that reminds me of the metamorphosis by Kafka.
He’s creating a country full of bugs! 8O
    I’m scared :-(

    Ahhhh….1978 those were the years.

  4. dorothy says:

    1978 was one year…

  5. True Wheel says:

Verbal abuse and management by stress will continue until staff morale improves…

A slip of the tongue letting out such narrow Brash sentiments?

These are neat, check out these photos of Google and Facebook office space. These two companies are amongst the largest and most successful on the internet. They have figured out what it takes to attract top talent to a high value added, high tech enterprise, and to retain it.

Now…tell me how John Key’s idea of employer-employee relations is going to help NZ succeed in 21st century high value added industries. Has he got the right idea?

  8. I sorry but what is the point of this post..?

What is the link between John Key and this company..?

With all the issues facing NZ is it really the best use of your time Trevor, as one of the 122 most powerful people in NZ, to make smarmy posts about what you think John Key might want employers to be able to say to employees..?

We need a strong opposition to keep a weak willed government accountable, this kind of pointless nonsense is the reason Labour is on the opposition benches… Poor…

  9. StephenR says:

Has he got the right idea?

How’d google and facebook come up with those ideas without the help of the government? :-D

  10. Tracey says:

I noted the new report on welfare has come out…

In the 1960’s 2% of population was receiving benefits (I wonder how many were widow pensions from the war?) , anyway I wonder at the benefit of using 1960’s as a comparison when those were the days of full employment, something unlikely to happen within current RB parameters.

  11. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Did Keys firm Merrill Lynch practice a policy of firing the bottom ranked 5-10% of employees EVERY year?
Of course when you move up the chain the bar is raised, and maybe JK had the option of go or be pushed after he had a few years at the very senior management level.

  12. chris says:

ghostwhowalks – What a pathetic jump in ‘logic’.

You use a made up fact that you dont know – and surmise that a guy who did very, very well and made millions was possibly not up to the job and left because he was going to be fired because of a rule you dont even know exist?

Seriously – I know spin is in your blood – but thats beyond belief.

  13. StephenR says:

GWW…I don’t get it – you have a scoop or something?

  14. chris says:

I might not have hit submit – because I cannot see where this posted when I thought I did it before.

But on the subject of banning birthday cakes – as listed in the post.

You know that the only party to implement anything about banning birthday cakes is – well Labour:

Perhaps – the quotes are more from your side of the house?

Chris why didn’t you tell the truth and say Anne Tolley lied when she said………Trevor

  15. Phil says:

How’d google and facebook come up with those ideas without the help of the government?

    Exactly.

  16. Loota says:

We need a strong opposition to keep a weak willed government accountable, this kind of pointless nonsense is the reason Labour is on the opposition benches… Poor…

Surely it doesn’t hurt to very briefly recall – even humourously – why so many workers activists worked so long and so hard for employee legal protections and rights to union access?

  17. slightlyrighty says:

“Don’t talk about other people and other things in this office. DO YOUR JOB AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!”

Sage advice that a certain Mr Carter should have adhered to perhaps?

  18. Simon says:

“Did Keys firm Merrill Lynch practice a policy of firing the bottom ranked 5-10% of employees EVERY year?”

In the world of investment banking and the like, traders are employed on short term contracts, usually between 12 months and 24 months in length. Written into the contracts will be various clauses including one which will say something along the lines of ‘failure to hit target or bonus in two consecutive quarters will result in loss of employment’ – something like that anyway. So, it is likely that investment banks do get rid of employees if they don’t perform.

  19. Monty says:

Trevor – although this was tagged “Humour” it is classic socialist tactic of guilt by association. If you want people who distance themselves and think themselves above “ordinary People, who had an attitude of do your job and keep your mouth shut, and no more birthday celebrations (and celebrations of any kind look no further that the Labour Government and their Ministers.

Under Labour’s watch all these things happened in the Civil Service – Workers were not allowed to have their own thoughts – but rather needed to give Ministers advice they wanted to hear, I personally experienced two different Ministers whose arrogance was beyond belief and would not want people speaking to them without being spoken to first, and because Clark used extravagance in the Public Service as an election plank the days of civil servants having a little fun and workplace enjoyment were firmly stomped upon.

Those in Glass House Trevor ……

  20. ghostwhowalksnz says:

SR ,its not called ‘keep your mouth shut’, its called ‘insubordination’ or in todays speak- throwing your toys out of the sandpit

  21. Adrian says:

I know this is off thread Trevor, but in light of Paul Holmes seeing the light, now is the time to go on the attack with something, anything, us Labourites are desperate for some momentum from our MPs. Business confidence is down again today, Labour has some traction in the polls and even the likes of the aforementioned Holmes are getting skittery, so now is the time to let loose a few of those policy ideas that may get attention and engender a bit of hope and re-thinking by those that slid sideways a couple of years ago. Don’t let this opportunity slip by, go hard. NZ deserves it.

One of my former customers, hated Xmas so much that the staff were Forbidden to put up a Xmas tree or any reference to Xmas..Funny, his staff turnover was very high..

  23. richgraham says:

    Adrian, you’re on to it.
Start with this Trevor – what is the Labour Party policy to bring income levels in NZ up to that of Australia ? we used to be ahead, now we’re well behind.
What is the Labour party plan, and what is the timeline.
    Come on Labour !

  24. Loota says:

Sheeeesh we even used to give foreign aid to Singapore…

  25. LabRat says:

Just to be clear, the second quote was Helen Clark wasn’t it?

  26. chris says:

@ Trevoe 1:34 – because the school itself said “the government’s healthy food guidelines are one of the reasons for the ban.”

thus Trolly wasn’t telling lies – as the school gave that as one of the specific reasons for the ban – and it was this specific school she was talking about.

  27. chris says:

oops – sorry just saw typo on name – that was a typo – not me trying to be a smarta$$ – Sorry.

I’m sorry too – I assumed she knew what she was saying in backing the school was wrong – that assumes a level of intelligence that I now, upon reflection, know she doesn’t have. I apologise Chris. Trevor

  28. “Surely it doesn’t hurt to very briefly recall – even humourously – why so many workers activists worked so long and so hard for employee legal protections and rights to union access?”

Sure, but this post is the political equivalent of pulling the girl you like’s hair on the playground… Just pathetic…

  29. Loota says:

    JMH lol great analogy.

  30. Tracey says:

“we used to be ahead, now we’re well behind.”

Of course Labour was closing that gap when it left office, and National have increased it… there’s plenty of places to score points against Labour but this wasnt one of them richgraham

  31. Hayley says:
