The cheese roll is a culinary icon. I’ve been saying it for ages. It’s ok if you North Islanders don’t get it. Coz we don’t care. All the more for us.
But it’s for real. The NZ International Science Festival is happening in Dunedin this week. The theme is Food for Thought. Amazingly, and interestingly, the cheese roll is a focus. There was a competition for the best recipe. Here’s the link to the TVNZ piece
Joy Jones’ recipe was chosen as the best of 81 entries. I’ll be contacting her to get some.
I’m bringing cheese rolls to parliament at the beginning of the next session. I know who wants them (and who doesn’t)
I should have been there today (at the cheese rolls comp). But couldn’t be in two places at once. But as many of us know, cheese rolls rule.
Defrosted some more of these tonight. Fantastic comfort food. Yummy.
Yeah, I’m surprised that you, the poster girl for cheese rolls, weren’t there.
There is something nice about celebrating a comfort food that has evolved in a local region. It is a reminder that there is more to life than the rootless international cuisine which has become ubiquitous.
I dont want to have to subscribe to the ODT online just for the winning recipe…anyone oblige?
@Tracey. Sorry, never thought of that. Here it is
International science Festival Cheese Roll Recipe:
500g Grated cheese (Mainland Mild Belnd or Mild Cheddar)
1 tin Nestle Carnation Evaporated milk
1 packet Maggi onion soup mix
1 finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon mustard powder
1 cup cream
Heat in microwave for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cool, spread lengthways onto long cut white bread from Marlow’s bakery, South Dunedin.
Roll into cheese rolls using three folds.
I’ll wager your Youth MP never thought she’d get to parliament and deal with such weighty issues as cheese rolls!!
Mozzarella apparently works well too.
Still not convinced to rush out and get the ingredients, I must say.
