A public holiday on friday?

Posted by Trevor Mallard on June 22nd, 2010

Parliament heads into urgency tonight. We can put bills through all stages.

How about a Holidays Act Amendment declaring Friday a public holiday if the All Whites win.

    Call it Paston Day.

  2. pdm says:

Typical leftie – always looking for a day off.

  3. Jeremy M Harris says:

How about a bill limiting the amount of urgency in a parliamentary term or limiting the comittees urgent legislation can come from…

It feels like there has been more urgent days this year and a half than standard ones…

  4. Anasazi says:

    Don’t be silly!

  5. Spud says:

Yes! :-D Another drinking day! :-D

  6. Monty says:

How about people take a day of their annual leave instead.

Of course if that did happen National would get the credit so maybe not such a bad idea. But how much would that cost the country?

  7. Loota says:

Morale and motivation would be so high for weeks Monty that net productivity would go up.

  8. Bill Bennett says:

    I’d vote for that.

  9. Spud says:

@Monty – nah, people now have to squander that to make up more sick days :-(

  10. Fabregas 4 says:

I’m on your side but if we didn’t have a day when Hilary died we will never have a national holiday ever.

  11. Loota says:

Fabregas4 – this is what makes me think that NZ isn’t serious about nurturing a strong sense of national identity. We don’t know how to commemorate or celebrate. Our leaders are happy to let these things slide. Sir Ed, a shining example of our spirit, known to all NZ’ers, a role model and an achiever on a global scale passes away – and its just another day on the job.

This would’ve been a thousand times more meaningful than a new flag, or song or coin.

They have to win first, dont jinx it Trevor.

If they win there will be many sickies pulled anyway, by all levels.

  13. Tracey says:

    Monty

You MUST remember the economy and country was going to collapse if we went to

    4 weeks holiday each year
    Paternity leave

It did collapse but more down to human greed and skullduggery by those with suits and ties ;)

  14. Tracey says:

Loota I agree we need to learn to celebrate but can we try to make it more than just sportsmen?

I KNOW Ed was MUCH more than that but I really do get sick of knighthoods for sportspeople. Sir Russell Coutts, Sir Colin Meads… Now Murray Halberg, was more thanjust a sportsman, and let’s praise and honour those in lesser known fields with world class reputations.

I am not a nationalist. My personal view is nationalism kills. My concern is that in NZ and Australia we confuse pride in fellow citizens with false worship of sporting gods.

    Trev

    If you have jinxed this…

I wonder if Paraguay will rest some people sitting on yellow cards? This Cup the cards dont get wiped until the end of the quarterfinals, so they may alter their team with that in mind.

  16. Michael says:

You are a bit slow Trev, John Key suggested that days ago

  17. Billy Bob says:

Typical of Mallard, he has never had to earn a dollar for himself and has no understanding of how to run a business and employ staff.
Who do you think is going to pay for a public holiday????
    Ohhh yes… the Bosses.
    Typical Labour attitude.

So if you all have a holiday, who is going to feed the livestock on my farm on Friday, shall we let them starve???

I guess I will have to pay time and a half and a day off, or work 15 hours myself, no holiday for the bosses eh Trev????

No wonder you are all in opposition and I hope you stay there for a damn long time…. fools.

  18. Loota says:

    Billy Bob!

What a selfish mean me me me attitude.

Even John Key said it would be a good idea when asked about in South Africa.

It would be a grand event for the nation to celebrate.

This country cannot achieve anything great while kowtowing to scrooges.

Well who showed their serious legislative hand first :)

I’m sure T.M. will have J.K.’s and your support :)

  20. Trevor Mallard says:

I’m happy to work with Key on this one in the interests of implementing his suggestion.

  21. Billy Bob says:

Loota, Forgot to mention that I will be working 12 hours to feed stock on friday in the snow, regardless of any holiday.
My point is simply that Mallard has lost touch with who pays for a holiday, and that businesses are not the bottomless pit of money that Labour and the Greens think. Mainly because no-pone in either party has actually had to earn a dollar for themselves, for had others relying on them to generate the money to make the pay packets.

  22. Spud says:

If the All Whites Win and Mallard gets the holiday then I’m drinking all day, champagne breakfast, wet lunch, happy hour, wine with the evening meal and then a dessert filled with alcohol :-D

    THANKYOU TREV! :-D

  23. Gary Jones says:

An All White day in lieu for two statutory holidays ‘lost’ by employees this year because they fell on Saturday (thereby ‘advantaging’ employers) would not cause the sky to fall in terms of loss of earnings or productivity.

  24. Loota says:

Mainly because no-pone in either party has actually had to earn a dollar for themselves, for had others relying on them to generate the money to make the pay packets.

I’m in the Labour Party and have to work the hours to make the money for myself. If I take a day off no one pays me. But sometimes its worth it to enjoy life. :)

  25. Billy Bob says:

Loota, what Mallard is suggesting is that if the all Whites win, then all Employers pay them a day’s wages to sit on their backsides for the day.

    Well fair is fair…

If the All Whites win, then a Public holiday…

However, if they lose, then all employees in NZ work for free for the day…

    Now that seems very reasonable.

  26. Spud says:

    @Billy Bob, yeah man :-D
I hope Brownlee isn’t going to be a killjoy about this today :-(
