This story has a long way to run yet – here is the Standard’s take.

LOL :-D As soon as I saw the title I knew it was you :-D

  2. Tracey says:

A bit tasteless Trevor (the name I mean) but you are never one to avoid courting controversy. ;)

Of interest to me is that PEDA has bugger-all history in the very area it is getting funding. I believe I heard someone connected to them state they had 11 or 17 students in total go through their course. And on that basis they get 4.8?

Aren’t many agencies losing funding or having to reapply under Whanau Ora who have a greater history than this group?

  3. chris says:

Im sorry Mallard, but thats a pun to far – in incredibly poor taste.

  4. Monty says:

Very interesting – and this was a good example of driving questions yesterday in Parliament – shame it was towards the end of Question time.

However I think there is a difference between making provision in the budget (although for a specific amount of $4.8m) and actually contracting and paying out the money.

Your questions will certainly ensure that best process is followed before any contract is signed for the delivery of services. If the government does not spend thi money wisely for tangible results then quite correctly Labour need to give them a hiding.

  5. Tracey says:

    Kudos to you Monty.

  6. Tigger says:

Monty – provision for what? Te Heuheu couldn’t even explain what they hoped to achieve with the money. And why allocate the money to PEDA if they hadn’t done due diligence?

  7. Tracey says:

I think the important thing here Monty, is that this Government has been meeting with PEDA and people associated with PEDA, then announce an intention to put aside 4.8m over four years for that organisation BUT is not prepared to say

what they can do that existing, known, experienced providers cannot
who the government has been speaking with both within PEDA and associated with it

What does become apparent is that they did not have similar conversations with any other organisation.

I think it is very telling that this is upsetting the very community this measure is supposedly designed to help.

  8. DeepRed says:

@chris: who’s being politically correct now?

  9. chris says:

    @deepred.

I didnt like the “key killing babies” and I dont like pedofile jokes either.

if you think thats too PC and that its ok – well that says more about you than anything.

  10. Ianmac says:

Monty:”However I think there is a difference between making provision in the budget (although for a specific amount of $4.8m) and actually contracting and paying out the money.”
The money is allocated in the Budget and approved by Parliament. It is to be activated on July 1 and no money is spent by agencies before then. They cannot not pay the money by law.

  11. Tracey says:

Is it just me, or did Georgina not deny she had been speaking with people “associated with” PEDA? Surely the Govt didnt really believe this would fly under the radar? Or did they?

  12. Spud says:

    Sniff, sniff, rat!

  13. sammy says:

Trevor, change the title please. Then we can focus on what matters … how were millions of taxpayer dollars awarded to this organisation, and who are they?

    It’s a very serious issue.

  14. Ianmac says:

At Chris: Are you a PEDAnt?

  15. Loota says:

    Ianmac, you’re just funny dude.

  16. Spud says:

    @Ianmac LOL :-D
    @M ods – the Ryall thread won’t open :-(

  17. ghostwhowalksnz says:

In good paparazzi tradition Sam Lotu Liga has become Sammy Li-Lo.

  18. Chris73 says:

You’ll shut down homophobic comments in your other thread but start one with a title like this?

    (I thougt it was funny)

  19. Akldnut says:

Will they sacrifice Georgie for Inga?

I asked Inga about the possibility of his running last week and he absolutely dispelled the idea.

  20. Rebecca says:

    Well said Monty & Tracey…

Trevor: in terms of the title of this post it is not funny in any way and is quite frankly, completely offensive that you write something with such awful connotations.

You only undermine your own credibility when you drop to this level of gutter politics.

  21. Loota says:

I can say that Trevor has not been one to hide his own personal style in any way shape or form. What can I say, he’s credibly in his consistency at least.

  22. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Rebecca- as they say about whats the most popular instrument in Folk Music .The off switch. You should consider it.

The budget allocation is so unusual in thats its a specific organisation. Thats normally for top tier groups like Plunket or Salvation Army.
While funds for vaguely defined purposes are usually up for competition amoung the competent groups in that area.
And a smaller unknown like PEDA Ltd ‘might’ get a small grant to see how they do first.
Note also the name ‘suggests’ its a community group rather than a private business.

  23. Rebecca says:

ghost mind your tone – you don’t want to get moderated now do you as well, what on earth would you do with your time if you couldn’t come on here & abuse others who have the ability to discern what is appropriate and what is not…

The title is offensive. Period. No way round it.

  24. Spud says:

“The title is offensive. Period. No way round it” so is NACT

  25. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Rebecca , your opinion as all ways, is valued by some, but would you criticize other people kids as well, because you can.
So much is inappropriate and there is so little time.

  26. Hilary says:

When you are setting up an organisation or company you usually look at the risks/benefits of your acronym. PEDA obviously didn’t.

  27. Loota says:

    Good point Hilary…

  28. Rebecca says:

    ghost – nice save!

I will always hold anyone to account who implies child abuse so as to make a political point.

I like Trevor, but I don’t always like his approach to politics.

In terms of the actual issue I agree with Trevor’s pursuance of clarification. It doesn’t add up; the money clearly has been earmarked for PEDA so not sure why the Minister is saying it hasn’t been.

  29. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Doest PEDA Ltd offer some training courses , or plantations as they call them. So its a pedagogical business as well!
So many synonyms so little time

  30. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Rebecca, the Americans call them ‘earmarks’ , ie for a specific business rather than who is best for the outcome.
The writing up the application comes up after you have been designated the funding

  31. Loota says:

also known as ‘pork barrel spending’

More and more like the US political circus. Not a good trend to allow continue.

  32. Richard Shaw says:

The smell of decaying democracy is really beginning to pong on this issue.

Dodgy budget hand outs, local media being silenced, National party hopefuls in the wings (or forwards).

As Loota might suggest…here is some real money being inappropriately spent, not the nickel dimes of yesterdays story.

  33. Loota says:

    Yes, now we’re talking Richard.

  34. DeepRed says:

On a more extreme scale, you get the ‘roads to nowhere’ in Japan.

  35. Tracey says:

Ghost, PEDA has had a total of 11 or 17 (cant recall which number) of students through its programme/s

On Morning Report with S Plunkett I believe G Heu Heu all but said

“this had nothing to do with me, it’s all come from Bill English” JMO

She said she “couldnt rule out” offering it to tender, not the same as intending to

  36. Loota says:

This Standard write up on Ireland is worth revisiting too

    http://www.thestandard.org.nz/lets-not-repeat-irelands-mistakes/

  37. David says:

The title of this post is very inappropriate and highly offensive.

Particularly from a Member of Parliament. And particularly from a party that has made such a big deal of sexual abuse victims in regards to ACC.

  38. Loota says:

Would it have been ok if trevor put a space between ‘PEDA’ and ‘file’?

Maybe someone should complain to PEDA – as was mentioned earlier, organisations usually check out their name a little bit more carefully than this.

Feel free to complain to the head PEDA if you like.

  39. Matagari says:

While not being the most tasteful of titles, I think it’s served its purpose in gaining attention for this important issue. I trust Trevor will continue to hold them to account.

  40. Spud says:

I think the title is funny :-D
