Stand up for human rights in Malawi

Posted by Charles Chauvel on May 26th, 2010

Here is a link to a story that reproduces comments from Labour’s Rainbow MPs on the appalling human rights breach in Malawi – 2 men sentenced to 14 years’ in prison for sodomy.

If you want to do something about this, email Foreign Minister Murray McCully and ask him to register a protest with the Malawi Government. It is said that he is reluctant to follow Australia’s example – apparently their Minister of Foreign Affairs has already written to the President of Malawi about this.

    Agreed :-(

  2. Loota says:

Something similar sounding was pulled in Malaysia to put away the political opposition.

  3. Dorothy says:

McCully seems reluctant to do anything full stop – he’s the invisible man!

  4. What are their reasons, I wonder?

  5. Rebecca says:

How odd he doesn’t want to get involved. Regardless of ones views, Malawi has signed the ICCPR therefore they should adhere to it.

Well, even Israel is a signatory to the UN, and they have ignored over 100 resolutions in their time…

We all ignored Rwanda, and allowed 800,000 people to be kille d or raped in 100 days… we’re just not very good at helping African nations… aside from doctors without borders and their ilk, the only western nations who care about African nations care about ones with oil or other minerals.

Haha trust the lawyer to bring up Israel re countries in breach of agreements…I am surprised you also didn’t bring up the USA

However, similar to the arguments raised in the Bennett vs Fuller post, just because others are/have flouted the law doesn’t give us justification to do the same.

Of course it would be nice if all MPs were always consistent with their indignation at breaches of human rights but it would seem that some are more preferable to others.

The Taiwanese have had a bit to say to the previous government over the years…..

My comment was NOT intended to justify ignoring Malawi, quite the opposite. I was pointing out the inherent hypocrisy and self interest behind the decision-making. ;)

    Good stuff :)
