Te Tai Tonga Poneke- Random Acts of Labourness

Posted by Grant Robertson on May 19th, 2010

Following on from their gifts of Easter Eggs to cleaners around the city, the team from Labour’s Te Tai Tonga Poneke branch completed their second random act of labourness by giving away a load of second hand, re-conditioned bikes to the kids at the Arlington Apartments in central Wellington. I was there doing an electorate clinic, and it was just great seeing the delight of the kids at receiving what for many of them was their first bike. Just an awesome gesture. Well done team.

What a really nice thing to do. I dont think anyone could argue against this being a fantastic thing – Im sure you made the kids days.

Of course true giving and random acts of kindness you would not video it / edit and post on a political blog – thats when it becomes marketing.

Keep up the good work doing things like this – it is to be commended – but dont cheapen it by bragging about your good deeds.

Chris what we are trying to do is build up the team that are giving and helping – part of doing that is talking about it. Anyone involved in doing +ve things for a community as part of a group would understand that.

  3. Tigger says:

Chris – I see it as about inspiring others to do the same. Fantastic work everyone! Certainly makes me want to give back more!

  4. Chris says:

Dont get me wrong – I think its a good thing to be doing and congratulate you on it – I just have a real aversion to things like this being made ‘political’

Keep up the good work on it.

ahh come on – for the first comment on this – I get put back into moderation. Im sorry – does one have to be a 100% fan boi in order to keep out of moderation. I might have opposing views – but have never been rude nor trolling.

Not sure what happened there Chris, will check with Admin, Grant

@Chris. I should point out that it was my decision to put the video on Red Alert, not the Te Tai Tonga crew. I think what they are doing is great and they deserved to have it highlighted. This is a political blog, and they are part of a political party, so yes at a certain level it is a political act, but the point here is to support people who are doing great things in the community.

    I like the video, :-D :-D :-D

  8. Badger says:

I support this act – but I object to the publicizing of what should be a private act. Remember Jesus’s parable of the poor man and the pharisee…

  9. The Gnat Exterminator says:

Go Sonny and the rest of the crew. But a word of caution:

    217 Treating
    (1) Every person is guilty of a corrupt practice who commits the offence of treating.
    (2) Every person commits the offence of treating who corruptly, by himself or herself or by any other person on his or her behalf, either before, during, or after an election, directly or indirectly gives or provides, or pays wholly or in part the expense of giving or providing, any food, drink, entertainment, or provision to or for any person—
    (a) for the purpose of corruptly influencing that person or any other person to vote or refrain from voting; or

Hi Gnat, I wonder where tax cuts stand vis a vis “treating”?
