Who wants a cheese roll?

I haven’t done a cheese roll post for a while. But I am concious that there’s a group of cheese roll fans (fanatics) out there in Wellie who might appreciate one or two (or nine!).

I’ve just ordered a bunch of them from a school fundraiser. Shall I bring them to Parliament and how do you want them? Frozen or cooked?

Ideas?

And if you don’t want to comment on Red Alert I’m happy to have emails; clare.curran@parliament.govt.nz

I was lying in bed this morning thinking about having some for LUNCH!

  2. Doug says:

I think you should make cheese rolls available in all Schools they look really healthy. It could be part of the healthy School lunch program Labour is trying to push.

Oh I want some, right now. Can you post the recipe again please??

  4. Spud says:

How about a cheese roll morning tea?

  6. Cactus Kate says:

Nanny Rahui would deem these calorie laden snacks as healthy and therefore GST exempt.

Medical experts may differ on that opinion.

Perhaps Clare you could take a few shots of the lovely food available at Copperfields that the taxpayer pays for. A weekly segment on the blog…..

Maybe Kate next time you’re in town you could pop in for a cheese roll and shoot the breeze. The cheese roll thing crosses all boundaries.

Though I have to say that people from northern parts just don’t seem to get it (unless they grew up in the south or are close to someone who did). But always happy to stick some in the oven for you (with lashings of butter)

  8. Tracey says:

It IS very much a South Island phenomenon… Dunedin in particular.

  9. Shane says:

I’ve seen a few recipes for cheese rolls online that differ a bit, but do you have a favourite one Clare?

  10. Hilary says:

Clare, the last time I was in Dunedin I tried a cheese roll in a cafe just to find out what they were like. It actually wasn’t very nice as it was cold inside and a bit soggy. I’m sure that’s not how they are supposed to be. Do you have a recipe (including the right sort of cheese)? (Perhaps the school might find a market in Wellington for their fundraiser if they got into mail order?)

    Onion Inside?

  12. Trevor Mallard says:

Obviously has multiple benefits in cold climates.

Here’s a recent ODT recipe which looks pretty good, though to be honest I think the standard school fundraiser is to have grated tasty cheese and a sprinkling of maggi onion soup mix, roll up the bread, spread some butter on the outside, stick in the oven and after you take them out, smother it in more butter! Mmmmmmm

Not so healthy, but ok for a couple. I don’t actually eat them all the time. I guess you could tell if I did.
Comfort food Trevor. And an identity thing.

  19. Cal says:

I think I’ll need to have one of your cheese rolls to prove to my north island flatmate that it is NOT just cheese on toast!
