Party Central is possibly going to be held in a tent.
I can imagine all those rugby fans and tourists sitting around a campfire singing Kumbaya.
I’m sure everyone will have a great time but party central has been reduced to a piss up in a tent.
Reminds me of New Years up north.
I’ll take my ukelele.
Sorry Trev, just scrolled down and see you’ve already posted on this.
Are they going to have a campfire outside?
I’ll grab my plastic cup…some sawdust…can hear the laughing from overseas now…oh goody
How would Labour do it? I mean the world cup is rightly a circus
They could all sing “Loyal” too !!
Doesn’t the Labour party have some bigger issues to be tackling right now?
I’ve mentioned this elsewhere before, but once more: there’s nothing inherently bad about a tent for this sort of thing. There were at least half a dozen large tents at the 2010 Winter Olympics, several of which I visited. They were all very comfortable, enjoyable places to be. Noone was laughing.
I’m not saying the tent they are using is necessarily going to be like those in Vancouver – I don’t know, details haven’t exactly been forthcoming.I’m not supporting the demolition of the existing sheds (not yet at least – lets work out a long term plan before we do something we can’t undo). I’m not saying we should have a “Party Central” on a wharf.
I don’t know what the Labour Party want to do instead, but I definitely think using a tent or a minimally modified existing structure is the best route to take. Lets not spend any more mone on this than we have to. It’s the just the RWC, it’ll be over before you know it, and I suspect most people will be focused on something other than the building they are in. A far more lasting impression would be left by friendly locals who are good sports, by a well organised public transport system, by the provision of entertainment to fill the time between games (lots of local musicians we can show off to the world) than whether they are in a tent or some kind of billion dollar party hall.
There are so many flaws in this plan, and the plan for the RWC in general, and in fact in the NACT Govt’s whole approach to Auckland – putting up a tent just isn’t one of them. I always thought it was the National Party who scored the easy points at the expense of enlightened debate.
With respect Daniel the winter Olympics (several dozen countries, several thousand athletes, etc….) is a bit bigger than the RWC (16 countries, maybe 400 players).
What matters is what Nats now in Govt would do
The Govt proposes, the Opposition opposes, the Voter disposes
I am not an Aucklander but think that there would be more fun using the existing bars and parks and squares. Many pockets rather than one big one. I think Christchurch Cathedral Square is going to be set up with a huge Screen and space.
Isn’t the Auckland Party Central yet another one of John Key’s off the cuff ideas like, bike trail and others, where the troops were left to sort it? Will John front up to explain the farce?
@Daniel – think like the fly wheel approach – the tent issue may seem small on the face of it -but its small movements that start the fly wheel – once shes going it takes on a life of its own. And, the tent issues just a small part of a larger mosiac of issues – for akld and wider nz – and all the issues – small and large – need public awareness and debate.
@Kelvin LOL
@Kelvin 7.53 – But your one is funny too
“A far more lasting impression would be left by friendly locals who are good sports, by a well organised public transport system” They’ll all be riding on Elephants!
Fred – so what you’re saying is, the Rugby World Cup is just too small for a tent?
My question is … and the $20,000,000 announced last year on June to the Tourist Industry, where are they? I think Government should clarify if the “original” plan is not happening, what are they doing with the money instead?
