The screaming o is a mountainbike ride organised by good guy Shane Ross – a $20 event with voluntary marshalls and mainly donated prizes rather than flash stuff. About 150 riders.
It runs from the Catchpool entrance to the Rimutaka Forest Park through what used to be the five mile track to the Orongorongo Valley, down a four wheel drive track (actually very up and down) to coast and then back up the road.
A favourite local track – first walked it when four and before it had the Catchpool entrance – big hill called the gutsbuster now out of play.
Years ago there was a mtb ride organised by local Lions – went for a few years. My first ride on mtb was in 1993 event, 25k tough hills and I didn’t know how to work gears properly. A couple of years later I did a high speed 180 after hitting a rock, opened elbow to the bone, got to first aid and had choice of waiting a couple of hours for 4 wheel transport out or patch and ride. Patched up, to hospital a few stitches and on plane to Chicago that night.
Great thing was ths ride through the forest park and private land was initiated by DoC. And it was from Wainui.
Sounds great!
MTB – That’s motorbike eh? Would catch me moving that far through the hills without petrol!

Can we put a motor on that? Or is it a double bike where the other guy does the work? Now that sounds a bit easier.
