Any mines opened under changes that John Key is proposing will be closed by the next Labour led government.
There will not be compensation for mining companies.
So international (or local) mining companies – don’t waste your money.

And if anyone has any doubts Phil Goff will follow through, remember ACC?
Yesss!!! Thank your Labour.
Rebecca @ 7.33pm. Not schedule 4. See earlier comment.
And we provided the funding that is cleaning the Waiwhetu Stream – happened while I was Environment Minister. Agreed too slow on cows.
Yes I realise that Trevor and while this appears to give the Labour Party an ‘out’, it doesn’t.
I’m quite black and white on this issue; Labour either wants NZ to be 100% pure or not – any mining is a blemish on this brand as far as I am concerned as ANY mining is not good for land, is not good for conservation and most certainly is NOT good for the environment.
As for the Waiwhetu Stream apologies, I thought it was only improve the second half of Labour’s last term.
Told you I was a party jumper – if only I could mix and match you all!
I remember reading that there was a huge debate in the Aussie Labor party in the 80s over whether to put the Tasmanian forest into the conservation estate or cut it down… They eventually protected it, many traditional Labor MPs felt the governments job was to ensure working class people had employment as long as possible…
It is good to see that has changed over 20 years… Not even a days debate needed for the NZ Labour party to decide it is immeaditely against it and will even roll it back…
It is good to see Labour taking this stance on mining and on ACC if this is official policy. Potential investors need to know their industry will not be profitable. It will do more to prevent mining than many other move Labour could make.

I agree Rob. Maybe a statement re please don’t bring in other topics Jum Trevor
A good statement, Mr Mallard.
Interesting, however, that the Labour Government didn’t seem so worried about caring for the environment where Happy Valley was concerned. Will you shut that down too when I vote you back into power, or will you continue to allow the destruction of the only habitat for a subspecies of land snail?
Off topic but i will bite. You guys said there were 150 snails left. When they stopped counting Solid Energy had relocated over 4,000 of them.
Trevor,
Will you ever consider changing your name to Hugo Chavez?
No. But I’m sure any mining company considering coming here wants to know the risks they are taking.
Good on ya Trev!
Trevor
Do you have anything to add to this thread after the events in the house today?
The revelation that over 9 years Labour approved 200 mining permits on conservation land clearly needs some justification given the stance you have taken in this post.
I would also like to hear your perspective on the permit that Labour approved on schedule 4 land for mining gold, garnets and other gemstones. (an area of 168.5 hectares at Hart Creek – Paparoa National Park)
So Trevor, your mob allowed mining holus bolus when in office but now its a no-no because the Gnats want to do it?
Remind me why we should vote for Labour ever again?
Labour didn’t allow mining on the scale that the tories are planning!
Spud – You are right – the figures show that Labour allowed much, much more.
And not in schedule four which is the land Key wants to open up. It is the land Nick Smith said should never be mined.
