No thanks to Wellywood

Posted by Trevor Mallard on March 12th, 2010

I thought the Mayor of Wellington was taking the piss – or thought it was 1 April when she proposed a plastic imitation on the Mirimar hill.

She has given jafas a great opportunity to poke sticks at us as shown by two columns in the Herald today :-

Jim Hopkins: If Wellywood’s the answer, I have questions

and Brian Rudman : Two cheers for Wellywood – they’re welcome to their wannabe sign

Kerry please tell us you were just trying to be funny.

Noooo I love it! Yes it’s tacky, but it’s what most of us have been calling Wellington ever since Liv Tyler & co graced Barneys & Coyotes! However, it will never get the go ahead so I reckon we should try for WETAWOOD or perhaps even WOTWOOD (the Wot Wots) instead!!! :)

Kerry’s dumb idea has spawned a new name for the capital, Wallywood. And I reckon that one will stick. Just like ‘cake tin’ did. So much for teflon.

  3. PETER G says:

Don’t for God’s sake tell her that there is an election happening soon in AKL, we have enough loonies up here thanks very much.

We could always export Christine Fletcher down your way :)

bit sensitive there about what aucklanders think of wellington (not lower hutt) there trevor? Wellington is already the arts capital of new zealand. do we really to take ourselves so seriously that we can’t handle a bit of stick from the intellectual black hole that is auckland?

for a rather nice little commentary of our national image look here http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/3438978/Aussie-view-Don-t-feel-sheepish-about-Phoenix

And I hope everyone has seen the parody on YouTube …. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk-OYfY6vOA&feature=player_embedded#

    I think it’s an awful idea. :-(

I think it’s a great idea! Rudman is just jealous as most of the ‘film’ in Auckland is locally aimed arthouse pictures and lame television productions like Shortland Street. Wellington has produced the four biggest movies of the last decade. When it comes to Oscars Wellington has about two million to Aucklands none.

Auckland also has one professional orchestra and one professional theatre. Wellington has one professional orchestra (Vector, not the NZSO) and three professional theatres.

If there is ever a city that should shout about its achievement in the arts (even in a tongue-in-cheek manner) then it is Wellington.

Maybe they should add an emoticon at the end.

  9. Roger says:

It’s a great idea. Put’s Wellington on the map again.

  10. Fiona says:

    Tolleywood

  11. Fiona says:

Roger, “puts” does not require an apostrophe but under Anne Tolley, a similar grammarphobe, who knows?

  12. Fiona says:

    Not good taste Trevor

  13. Fiona says:

    Taggersville?

  14. Paul 2.0 says:

I thought the smiley face on the reservoir when you fly into Wellington was endearing, the Golem and the Pumpkin Airport and the Wild at Heart thing were pretty clever.. but this thing is just .. well, something that should be in the Hutt…
