Just Smile & Wave Boys

Posted by Lianne Dalziel on January 20th, 2010

A friend mentioned that her daughter was a fan of the Madagascar movies.  She said that Skipper, the penguin leader reminded her of the Prime Minister - I think it was the catch-phrase.  Or maybe that would be better expressed as a key phrase!

Lol. After watching that with my children I agree.

  2. Mel Barker says:

phil goff reminds me of caspar the ghost, seems to pass through walls unnoticed

  3. PETER G says:

Brilliant, and very true, don’t scare the horses do nothing contentious…

  4. Tigger says:

Look Mel, if you’re going to try and malign someone at least get the spelling right. Casper is his name.

Lianne, you nailed it – smile and wave – you could tag most of government with that at the moment…

I cannot find a posting on Mike Moore’s ambassadorship to the US.

Why does Red Alert forget to congratulate a former Prime Minister and fellow Labour Party member?

  6. Raymon A Francis says:

Well, so that is the new Labour attack on Key
    “Key the penguin”
Hope it works better than Slippery Key, you can’t trust him
Remind me, how well did that work
Three years, and counting, in the wilderness

  7. Monty says:

I find Labour’s obsession with John Key quite sad and pathetic. Lucky for NZ that 55% polling gives National a 20% lead over Labour. Here is an idea for you – how about focusing on real issues and you will stop coming across as petty and irrelevant.

Are you criticising him for being popular and taking advantage of photo opportunities, or are you just envious that no one is interested in any Labour MP for any photo op?

  8. Joel Walsham says:

Raymon, unlike the National Party, we are not simply creating spin for votes, the trust issue is a valid issue and it is not a matter of if it “worked or not” as I cannot think of many people I know that trust John Key, even people who were happy to say that they support National before the election.

Back to the post, I agree that it pretty much sums the Government, especially Key, it is just a pity that Skipper didn’t also say “Oh you know, I am pretty relaxed about it”.

  9. paul says:

Actually, if you know the movie, you will see that the ’smile and wave boys, smile and wave’ is quite appropriate. Think about it – next time you see him on the news or breakfast, and someone asks him about an area that is a bit of a worry for an average kiwi – he will sit on the fence and ’smile and wave’. It makes him look like a bit of a nice guy at the start, but if you look at the movie, the penquin leader is all caught up with appearances – things are not going so well – so he states ‘just smile and wave boys…’ – very apt for our PM. When the whatsit hits the fan, he does just that – while the rest of his team pick up the slack – often screwing it up at the same time.
A good way of looking at him I think.

  10. paul says:

    @Raymon – if the ‘wave’ fits….

  11. Patrick A says:

It’s true that National have mastered the ‘Hey look Ma’ – no hands’ form of government. On the other hand Labour wouldn’t know what an effective opposition looks like.

Ad hominem attacks on Key aren’t that useful at getting yourself back into government.

Labour wouldn’t know what a real issue was – this is why they will not win the next election.

@ Joel Walsham. Spin for votes? What do you think Goff’s ‘Nationhood’ debacle was about?

  12. Nathan Mills says:

Any chance of a debate on this site re the three strikes legislation? Or happy to roll with this fluff?

  13. Matt says:

I would say that Phil’s “Nationhood” Speech is one of the the most intellegent speeches i have ever listened to from a Labour MP let alone a Leader of the Party.

I voted for National in the Last Election and prior to Key becoming a complacent Liberal weakling i fully Supported National but that will not be the case so long as this twit leads the Party,Hes a great guy and a good politician but an extremely weak Leader its the flipside of Helen,No offence to Labour but we whave gone from a PM with a Socialist Ideology and Totalatarian tendencies to a Leader who has absolutly no “Guts” and is Very Liberal and Weak.

By the way i like the reference to the Penquin in Madagascar, it is extremely simarlar to Key,at least the way he portrays himself in the public arena

    From http://www.nick.com/shows/penguins-of-madagascar/characters/skipper.html

    SKIPPER
Skipper has the heart of an action hero and the swagger to match. He’s a natural leader with a single-minded focus on results. Skipper approaches every situation with intensity, which may explain his overly active imagination. To Skipper, every innocent coincidence appears to be a nefarious conspiracy. It’s a good thing that he’s 100% confident that only his team is capable of finding the truth!

    Quotes
    “This madness ends now!”
    “You didn’t see anything!”
    “Evasive maneuvers, boys.”

I think JK would be quite pleased with that description. Own goal there Lianne.

  15. paul says:

    “Evasive maneuvers, boys.”

Yep – that about sums it up – avoid making a call on something, sit on the fence and smile and wave.

“You didn’t see anything” – nope – not the public outcry on issues, not the mess the team is making and not when its pointed out to you. Perhaps it should be “you didn’t hear anything’.

%100 percent confident in only HIS team…..well – thats true – best not to seek advice from those who actually know how to do something (education for a start). Fancy taking advice from experts – no, no, much better to disregard that.

Yes, I am sure he would be most pleased.

  16. Pedrovsky says:

Sour grapes, bitterness and negativity is what lost the last election.

  17. Sean says:

Actually no Pedrovsky, these are fair issues to raise.

If you look at the performance of a National MP who is actually competent whether you agree with his agenda or not, like Simon Power, then compare his performance to John Key’s, you notice John Key doesn’t do much and will only commit to a position when he thinks it is absolutely safe or he can’t evade any longer.

John Key’s top event this year has been being photographed drinking a Monteiths New Zealand lager out of a bottle at a standing next to Prince William, who was actually working the barbeque. Smile and wave boys, smile and wave.

  18. Self-employed says:

I’m sorry, I must have missed something – are we back at Kindy? Silly me, I thought this country had really serious issues to resolve – you know, the ones that the OECD reports highlight…..a broken tax system, a broken health system, a broken education system, a broken ACC system, horrific level of cruelty against women, children & animals. Grow up Labour.

  19. Steve says:

Ah classic Labour sore losers, to busy with irrelevant rubbish than actual issues. But then what else are you going to do with that much time on your hands. sweetd and Monty you nailed it. Go home Lianne.

  20. Lianne Dalziel says:

Thanks for the feedback – raw nerve for some I can see.
