Red Alert

Blog of the year

Posted by Chris Hipkins on December 22nd, 2009

In a move that I’m sure will surprise many, Cactus Kate has named Red Alert her Blog of the Year.

I’m not sure whether we should be humbled or concerned…

  1. Monty says:

Cactus has obviously gone soft – I expect she will be immediately expelled from the VRWC – and rightly so.
Whaleoil was only disqualified because he won it last year.

Good to see your comments on Kiwiblog on a regular basis.

  2. Monty says:

I believe you should never have been given this highly prestigious award on the basis of your over-sensitivity to trolling and moderation.

For God’s sake – have you seen the crap trolling by that fawning Spud – he has to be the most irrelevant and pathetic commentator on this blog – and those stupid expression faces whatever the hell they are called. Yet you fail to ban him – at least a bit of even treatment.

And release Tim Ellis – his comments always inspire debate – three months is too long and demonstrates that you really seem unable to handle intelligent and strong debate.

  3. Spud says:

    I haven’t broken any blog rules :P
Also the faces are there to be used, and get this a read a study that said that the younger a person is the more they are likely to like emoticons. That means you’ll see more and more of them in years to come. LOL

I’m not fawning I mean my comments. :-D I’m not aiming to be relevant just want to throw in my two cents. Deep down you know you love me M, onty. :-D

  4. Spud says:

Oh yeah, congratulations! Red Alert has been great this year. Y’all deserve this award!! :-D

  5. ghostwhowalksnz says:

Tim Ellis has found greener pastures where his suppressed rage is more in check

  6. LabRat says:

The chairwoman of the VRWC nominates Red Alert blog of the year, keep it up guys, you must be doing something right.
And Merry Christmas Spud, you’re a beacon of inspiration to Red Alert readers.

  7. Trevor Mallard says:

@ Monty 11.32 I think you Act guys are just jealous because you don’t have the drive/talent/focus to set up and run a blog.

And there is plenty of room on Kiwiblog and Whaleoil for right wing drivel and we want this blog to be suitable for kids a decade younger than you to read. So we encourage on thread debate and moderate off thread and abusive stuff.

Tim puts people off our blog and his obsessions make it harder for a broader range of people to comment. And we want range and depth not trite trolls.

  8. Sherylyn says:

Spud is just like Phool on Kiwiblog, just keep scrolling to avoid the disruption

  9. Spud says:

Thanks Labrat Merry Christmas to you too. :-D

  10. Monty says:

Trevor – I am a swinging voter – (between Act and National). I do not run a blog because I am busy enough with three primary school age children, trying to make money (I am a capitalist after all) trying to find a full time job that pays what I want and lastly, I could not dedicate the time to make it as successful as Kiwiblog, Gotcha, Cactus, and RoarPrawn.

I have made a very concerted effort to avoid your over-sensitivity and get another ban. But I do wonder when you are going to take me off moderation (Get the bloody hint????)

I believe Tim and other right wingers make this Red Alert blog what it is and without us you would just have another Standard which is not to dis-similar to a whole bunch of nutters all discussing how wonderfull the left is in a sound-proof room – no one else hears them and cares even less.

At least in this forum we get to air our views very directly and bluntly to opposition MPs. I hope you actually take on board the feedback we give because sometimes a very fair criticism of MPs is that they can be removed from what is happening at the grassroots level. You try to blow up issues for media attention that really people do not care about and in this forum you should get the message if you are wasting your time and effort.

National’s attempt at blogging has been very pathetic and they need to change the way they blog to have the success Red Alert has enjoyed.

  11. Inventory2 says:

“I’m not sure whether we should be humbled or concerned…”

Be afriad Chris; be very afraid ;-)

  12. Spud says:

Who keep letting S, herylyn in? I don’t care if you read my comments or not. :P You only ever comment about me zzzzzzzzz.

  13. BLiP says:

    Concerned. Deeply, deeply concerned.

  14. winston smith says:

    @ Trevor 1:06pm
“And we want range and depth not trite trolls”

Having looked at just a few of your parliamentary questions, prime example of a troll who can’t even use a perfectly appropriate thread to copy stuff from Kiwiblog. Be warned Winston. Trevor

  15. Camden Whelk says:

If I understand what Cactus Kate has written Red Alert won her award for being the second biggest gadfly in the New Zealand political bloggosphere for 2009. That’s a pretty ambivalent honour.

  16. Chris L says:

    Leave Spud alone!

  17. Spud says:

    “I am a swinging voter” Grrrooooowl :-D
    @Chris L thanks man, Merry Christmas :-D

  18. Trevor Mallard says:

@Monty – you forget that I know who you are and some of your friends would be surprised that you describe yourself the way you do. I’m not going to out you now but cut the bullshit.

  19. BLiP says:

Wow!! All that slagging off of The Standard – must be rattling some cages.

    Result!

  20. Phil says:

Wow!! All that slagging off of The Standard – must be rattling some cages.

No, it’s just that those of us of a (centre) right persuasion always knew The Standard was a pale and impotent shadow of a blog outside of it’s own clique. Now that Red Alert is here, we’ve got a decent metric to measure it’s mediocrity against.

  21. Anne says:

Wow!! Is Monty a minister’s troll then? Instead of a caption competition how about a sweepstake on which minister he is serving. Trevor can announce the winner at a time of his choosing.(smile)

Followed your instructions Spud but got no smiley face!

  22. BLiP says:

True. The Standard does appeal more to the thoughtful than the popular.

  23. Trevor Mallard says:

    @Anne No.

  24. Anne says:

    @ Trevor Mallard.
What a disappointment but never mind, worth a try. (smile)

  25. Spud says:

@Anne you don’t see the face until after you have submitted the comment. Try again : and ) : and D : and (

    @Trevor – Aw :-(

  26. Sherylyn says:

    My comment deleted? wonder why?
    Truth maybe
Your nasty one about Spud @1,16 still there. There is a small group who moderate but I haven’t seen any of yours deleted. Normal policy is to note that a comment has been deleted but one of the newbies might have cocked up. Try again if you like. Trevor

  27. Cactus Kate says:

Monty, being a true member of the VRWC means you don’t give a s**t about dissent from fellow VRWC members.

I will give an award to whomever I damn well please.

  28. Whaleoil says:

I’m gunning for you now Kate.

Hey guys maybe have your VRWC tiffs on a VRWC site Trevor

  29. Anne says:

    :then)

  30. Anne says:

    Gawd… I give up.

  31. Monty says:

Trevor – I can confirm that I described my situation is a true reflection of who I am. The reason I use my old nick name is because under Labour I feared that I would be unable to work easily in my professional field in Wellington such was the spite that was demonstrated on more than one occassion by Labour Ministers. When I have enough money and work is a choice rather than a necessity maybe I will use my real name.

I just hope you are not confusing me with a relative who has disgraced our good family name by being an ardent Labour supporter.

  32. Bea says:

The internet is a tiny tiny world eh?

Congratulations Red Alert. You should certainly mark it as a success that your blog allows you to speak to and hear from a wider audience than the looney left.

Now, can you stop dropping posts into the archives quite so quickly? I never see the posts of posters posting after me and lack the motivation to look in the archives.

  33. Spud says:

Place and colon and the bracket beside each other with no gap between them and a space before and after them. I can type that without making the face. :-D

  34. Gooner says:

The question is this: us right whingers can at least ‘fess up and give the enemy an award if it’s deserved.

If the shoe was on the other foot, could you see Red Alert nominating Kiwiblog or Whaleoil as blogs of the year?

    Just askin’.

  35. Spud says:

Wait I just saw that you did it. :-)

  36. kaine T says:

    Leave Spud alone!

Monty – you’re quite a spiteful person on here sometimes. If this blog is equally for right wing suck ups, it must be so too for those who feel the love for the left, the centre and your crack-pot mates over in the dark corners in the association of consumers and taxpayers. Claiming you need space to write as you feel without a personal prejudice would require an equivalent tollerance from you on which you are lacking.

Congratulations Trevor and Clare for the ongoing quality of this blog. And Spud… more emoticons!!

  37. Monty says:

Kaine – I am anything but spiteful. I love political debate and I like to put my views very bluntly as I appreciate those who disagree with me to put their views bluntly. Just so long as people understand why they think a particular way and understand the consequences of a particular policy. I feel way to often the left have a particular view of the world but it is devoid of practical application. If you talk to some of my leftard friends they will tell you that I actually have a lot of tolerance for their views. I just love to take the piss out of them as they do me. :) (god I hate those things but your lefties are such a houourless lot)

Red Alert is the Blog of the Labour MPs. I very much appreciate being able to communicate and debate with Labour MPs very directly. I like the fact that Trevor and the rest of the Labour MPs actually respond to criticism. What a wonderful forum. I appreciate the effort they put in, the humour and their individual viewpoints. I can understand why Kate made this her blog of the year – possibly for the same reasons as I state above.

I use a non de plume on the advise of a relative who was genuinly concerned that my viewpoints and the way I put them could impact on job prospects in Wellington. This was especially so under a Labour Government and proof of this was the Benson-Pope / Scatchell affair which was a disgrace. Trevor knows exactly who I am, but I do trust him not to out me. That would be entirely unethical.

  38. Phil says:

If the shoe was on the other foot, could you see Red Alert nominating Kiwiblog or Whaleoil as blogs of the year?

Not really, no… but your sample selection aren’t exactly shining lights.

  39. Phil says:

True. The Standard does appeal more to the thoughtful than the popular.

I’ll respectfully disagree with you there BLiP.

After the we’ve-all-been-to-a-BBQ-with-a-typical-National-voting-racist fiasco, I lost whatever faith I had in The Standard being thoughtful.

  40. Spud says:

    @Kane T – Thanks and Merry Christmas! :-D

@M, onty – see using that emoticon didn’t hurt. :-)

  41. Amanda Hill says:

congrats Red Alert on a stirling year – the contributions from our elected representatives have ranged from the thoughtful to the entertaining – keep it up. It’s great that at least one party in Parliament has the ability to be transparent and open to debate.

Merry Christmas to you all – kia kaha and keep fighting the good fight!

  42. Kaine T says:

We could agree to disagree on the spiteful comment… I think you and I both know you are capable of writing in a way that articulates your view clearly as well as lending to an inference of insult.

I’m not bothered by that but it’s a little disingenuous to plead for a reasonable hearing from the “leftards”, (a term that amuses me by the way, thank you) but to write cleverly enough so as to plead innocence to inciting a particular vein of commentary. Credit to your diction but don’t plead the case.

I suspect you would find no matter who is in government, the perceptions of being picked on by either side of the other are ever present. But that would assume some kind of profile, and if that is the case, then it’s flag to the mast my friend.

I staffed a Labour government, I’m sure you’d agree that if I attended a meeting with Business New Zealand now, I suspect my hearing may not be as polite as it once was. It is what it is.

Spud, teach me the emoticons… I can’t get them to come up.

  43. Spud says:

    They don’t appear until after you have submitted your comment. : D : ) : ( : x : P

Five of my favourites to get you started. Just loose the gaps I’ve created. :-D

  44. Kaine T says:

Gracias… now on what other blog could you do that aye? :D

  45. Trevor Mallard says:

And I hope that next year the real competition comes from National Party MPs who are allowed to write what they think all by themselves and even enter and respond on their own. Though I fear that such an approach would show average talent closer to a Whale than penguin, prickly one or average Red Alert or Std contrib. :D

  46. Clare Curran says:

Next year, Red Alert will get even better. I promise to try to write shorter posts (mostly). I’m not holding my breath for National MPs to begin blogging for real.

The real challenge is for us to increase our audience so more people know we exist. And what we have to say.

Aside: I think all I’ve done is encourage you Spud. Oh well. Where’s my flower?

  47. Spud says:

I’m going to contact wordpress in the new year, what is your favourite colour?

  48. Anne says:

    Better late than never…
Yeah Spud, I got a face up but god only knows how! It didn’t appear after I submitted and checked. :andc

  49. Anne says:

    :and(
