John Key is relaxed. Good on him. Its certainly important in politics to not sweat the small stuff. A lot happens in a day and if you get too uptight it can be bad for your health. There are big issues to worry about, they are the ones where your energy needs to be focused and where the future of the country is at stake.
So, for my own enlightenment I did a Google Search to look at the things our Prime Minister is ‘relaxed’ about, to see whether the chilled out leader has got it right. This is but a sample.
- Afghanistan. Well specifically requests for troops to go there. On the same subject, how does his good buddy Barack feel? Ah, not so much.
- Religion. A thorny topic, so probably best to not get too uptight about it. Mind you some people do….
- About being called relaxed. This was the Rodney moment suggesting he ” did not do anything”. Ah, its the friends you make in politics that matter….
- Changes to Auckland City boundaries. They are a little less relaxed in Rodney and Franklin….
- Low uptake of the nine-day fortnight. hmm, lots of people losing their jobs? Ah lets just all chill out.
- Christine Rankin. Not even Christine Rankin is relaxed about Christine Rankin.
- The Emissions Trading Scheme. What he told Fed Farmers but rest of planet might feel differently.
I think we might set up a “relax-ometer” to monitor the tension levels of our fearless leader. Will be interesting to see the shifts.
Mine was the 100th response! and this is 101!
Funny how ‘jennifer’ sounds like our old friend ‘Tim’, note her style of ‘questions’ such as ‘Are you saying Labour should relax until 2014?”
Ghost, no thanks. No way Timmy could do the stuff I can do.
Well he wasn’t robotic when he was on Breakfast talking about Harawira and he wasn’t robotic when he was giving his Nationhood speech. I haven’t met him but have met people who have and they told me that he was a nice guy, and they seemed to really, really like him.

May be so, Spud, so how do you explain the 5 percent thing? It can’t simply be about proximity to the last election. The party is on 30-odd points, so the bulk of them also want JK? Wassup here?
I think part of it is the media spin in favour of the government, the proximity to the election while the voters have just come out of 9 years, even Helen Clark has been at the very bottom. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him and I think he’ll be fine.
Yeah I do find it a bit strange that Labour voters would want JK, but when I think about it some of it can be put down to opposition panick, the chorus cries still of “bring back Helen Clark.”
Personally, I think its just one of those phases.. my bet is it will be out the door in 2 weeks.
Are you saying his being unpopular is a phase? What will be out the door in 2 weeks?
The undue negative media attention, maybe 2 months

– Two weeks would be good, right in time for Christmas.
Yes… Phil can have a media free happy family christmas…Yea rite… Tui lol
The thing wif media is u neva no hus in the spotlite next. Vud be you spud!!!
James, Spud take the conversation off line please. Thanks, Grant.
As the old literary quote goes “the rich are different from you and I” and 50 mill in the tank might well encourage Mr Key’s relaxed attitude. But it is also likely that the PM is an “elephant rider” ie doesn’t mind if it is an Indian or an African variety as long as he is directing it.
And before any tory starts about wealth envy, I don’t mind if people have a pile, what I do care about is if such people try and enforce inequality for the rest of us, aka pulling up the ladder behind them.
To clarify- its been fun, but comments are now closed for this particular post.
