Happy Labour Day – for some

four-weeks

In case you didn’t catch it on the Standard or elsewhere, have a look at this website.

While you’re there you can go into the draw to win a copy of Samuel Parnell : A Legacy  - by saying what day you’d declare a public holiday if you could, and why.

It’s a good reminder of what Labour Day is actually about.

But it’s not a good Labour weekend for the 250 Bridgestone workers who were told by their employers on Friday they will be laid off.

How thoughtless of the company to give the workers the bad news just hours before Labour weekend began.   The only (small) consolation is the workers have redundancy pay.

So while you enjoy Labour Day, spare a thought for these workers and their families.

Those poor workers! :-( I hope most people are having a good Labour weekend.

Maybe we could get someone, maybe someone called “Bill”, to poll what Labour Day is actually about?

Without wanting to diminish what is no doubt a hard time for the affected workers, are you suggesting that a thoughtful employer would have hidden the truth, once known? You’re an employer and come mid-December you realise there’s no way you can avoid laying people off in the next month. Should you “give them a happy Christmas” and defer telling them until the New Year?

It strikes me that once *you* know, you have a duty to tell those affected as soon as possible, lest they embark on spending decisions they would otherwise have deferred.

What IS the thoughtful interval to leave between making the difficult decisions to lay people off and letting them know?

When on earth is a good time to tell a worker his/her job is lost and they are gone .. NEVER EVER EVER. Good call Mark.
It is a fact of life unfortunately.
I feel for them all as I did during the purge of my fellow Railway mates in the 80’s – 90’s.
I wish them well and hope we get out of this terrible time real soon.

there is another thought on redundancies Darien .. I refuse to believe anyone looks forward to telling others that their job is gone and that they are now, or are going to be .. redundant.
