Julie and Julia

Posted by Trevor Mallard on October 21st, 2009

A great fundraiser for Pacific reconstruction held in Petone last night. About $3k from 100 people. The Lighthouse theatre was as always very supportive of good causes. And wonderful people too.

Congratulations to the Community Board. Interesting that they kept the proceeds in a bag for giving to the Red Cross because the Council doesn’t let them have a bank account.

The movie is the blending of two stories.  Not heavy but interesting contrast between writing a book and the immediacy of a blog.

My only issues were to do with Meryl Streep. She is getting old.  60. Doesn’t seem right.  And her voice pattern reminded me of David Lange. Weird.

I love the way NZs are pulling together to help Samoa. :-)
The movie sounds good. I might go and see it. :-)

  2. Clare Curran says:

I think Meryl’s gorgeous and talented and getting old isn’t so bad Trevor, it happens to all of us.

And while we’re on the subject, go to

and order some T’s – please!

Trevor, too speak so of Meryl Streep is to invite demolition! Be wary! :P

  5. Mac1 says:

    60! Old? Bah! Humbug! Whippersnapper!

I’d take you on in cycling but my tyres are flat and it’s too far to bend down.

    Otherwise…..

  6. Bea says:

I thought Meryl Streep imitated Julia Childs’ voice quite well. Although Julia Childs always sounded a bit drunker.

  7. Brenda says:

why is Meryl Streep being 60 an “issue”?

  8. Trevor Mallard says:

Brenda – an issue for me – I think I froze her in Julia, The Deer Hunter and Kramer v Kramer but from memory they were all 1970s movies. I’ve watched a few videos recently. She has always been one of films biggest talents.

  9. Trevor Mallard says:

and Bea – she did do the voice well, and she was sober – but shut your eyes and listen to the pattern and you could hear David.

  10. Spud says:

I loved her in Kramer vs Kramer and this film where she was a French speaking war spy. Have you seen Mamma Mia? Fun film, though Brosnan’s singing will strip David Lange right out of your brain. :-)

You can anti age the outside really well these days, but there’s still no treatment to keep voices young. I think she looks great for her age. :-)

Meryl was brilliant – Julia Childs by all accounts had somewhat odd mannerisms and Streep captured them perfectly. She also put on a lot of weight – what a perfectionist. Personally I found the 1940s/50s part of the film much more interesting than the modern bits.

  12. Trevor Mallard says:

I liked both bits. Maybe the perils of the blogger appealled to me.

I’m sure you will work through your “issues” eventually, but just to help – in 2006 three of the nominees for the best actress oscar were women over 50: Dame Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal); Helen Mirren (who won for her role as QEII); and Meryl herself (Devil Wears Prada).
The most shocking recent development in Meryl Streep’s career is the discovery she has a sense of humour.
p.s. let’s not forget the amazing Dame Diana Rigg (aged 71) who wanted to leave the Avengers tv series in the 1960s when she found out she was being paid less than the cameraman. I have “issues” with that.

  14. Clare Curran says:

All power to you Red Rata. I adore all of them. And then there’s Katharine Hepburn! Women who were fabulous actors when they were younger and as they aged. Like good wine. Red that is!
The thing about Meryl is, she completely “does” the character she’s in. Unlike an actor like Nicole Kidman, who always seems to be Nicole Kidman, no matter what the part.

That’s a nice description of immediacy of a movie being between a blog post and a book. Perhaps that’s why An Inconvenient Truth was such a hit. Green logic for the masses. Thanks for helping Samoa – see http://www.south-pacific.travel/blog. Also, guess Meryl and David are both icons of our generation. See also http://www.greenbranz.org/?p=46#more-46
