Herald on English succession

Posted by Trevor Mallard on October 4th, 2009

Patrick Gower and Fran O’Sullivan start the search for the next Nat leadership combination. It is amazing how the dream team is crumbling.

My money would be on Power for Deputy and Joyce for Finance if they changed but I think they will try and tough it out.

  1. Maybe – but Mr Power’s star is currently not rising and he’ll have to reposition himself strongly to be a future leader. The Key-Joyce axis, and who is for and against it, is an interesting study.

  2. Tim Ellis says:

Interesting point Mr Mallard but with your own leader only touching 6% in the preferred prime minister polls with Mr Key consistently punching past 50%, I don’t think there’s any urgency for the nats to change their team.

I like the Blinglish/Key combo, hours of fun :-D

  4. Unpleasantly Odouriferous says:

Why change a thing? English is now dead man walking. He’s no longer a threat to Key. He’d be well-advised to keep this lame deputy as long as he can. It blocks the key strategic position of Finance/Deputy from someone who might actually have a shot of deposing you (eg Joyce and or Power).

Like Tim says, how is it crumbling? One minor scandal in the first three years of the leadership team! How many did the Clark/Cullen team have? They toughed it out and so will Keinglish. One scandal doesn’t mean the collapse of a leadership team, I suggest you take a look at the polls, Trev!

  6. Linda says:

Tolley for Finance – apparently she can find money for anything they want.
From stuff website article on parenting classes:
‘But more than $45m will be pulled from other Government programmes to fund the initiative. “We have a whole range of little pots of money, so we are just looking at how we can combine all those,” Mrs Tolley said.’

Sorry, I’m not up with how to do the link thing.

  7. Paul says:

“We have a whole range of little pots of money, so we are just looking at how we can combine all those,” Mrs Tolley said.’

About time they put it where it should go – NOT into closing schools!

  8. [...] And here is what I said last week. [...]
