Do the Maori Party get anything for the ETS?

Posted by on September 17th, 2009

I’m sure Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples have a strategy in there somewhere, but it’s pretty hard to spot at this stage. Surely they didn’t agree to give the National government their votes on the ETS before working out exactly what they would get in return?

First they claimed they were getting an increase in benefits. Turns out they aren’t. Then Pita Sharples claimed they were getting extra home insulation for 2000 Maori households. Turns out perhaps not.

In fact, from the information we have available it looks like not one single extra home will be insulated. All the National government have agreed to do is bring forward funding from future years so that they can keep up with demand. Hardly a massive victory for the Maori Party.

So what, if anything, did the Maori Party actually get for supporting the ETS?

Perhaps they simply agreed with National and supported it – you know for the greater good.

Not every party is like NZ First.

    E kore

  3. Bikerkiwi – so if they didn’t get any concessions out of the National Government why did the Maori Party change their vote?

  4. bikerkiwi says:

no idea. Perhaps they discussed it – found out more information and changed their position.

kudos for acting in positive manner.
The fact they did something for nothing sets a good example for political parties.

Its our lives and money you guys are dealing with.

Maybe not a massive victory, but a victory none-the-less might have been their point of view?

Biker and Mark – Churlish remarks at best. Why make this deal when Labour and National were moving towards a cross-party agreement that would have stood a change in government. What they’ve done is actually bad for the country and bad for the Maori Party. It smacks of incompetence – in fact much of what the MP has done in past twelve months smacks of incompetence.

Perhaps the pay off will be getting Whanganui finally spelled properly.

    blip – lol

BLiP, thanks for that, now I have Coke on my keyboard :)

On the upside, my sweet sweet avatar now works!!!! Hooray!

  12. jabba says:

Blip, Wanganui is already spelled correctly.
As mentioned in another post, maybe Auckland will be called Tamaki Makaurau, sounds like you would be in favour of that.

  13. H. Fee says:

Yes, of course the Maori Party got something out of this ETS deal – shafted.

Jabba – “Wanganui” isn’t spelled correctly. I would have thought the preponderance of evidence showed that. The issue’s really whether it should be corrected or not. Your denial of the basic facts says more about your thinking than you realise. It’s a bit like people who pointedly insist on saying “Wangaray” instead of Whangarei or calling Mt Taranaki “Egmont” or saying “Rhodesia” instead of Zimbabwe. It’s quite revealing. But do carry on. Apropos nothing in particular, funny how people are so obsessed with Barrack Obama’s birth place. That’s quite revealing about the individuals involved in that particular bit of denialism. I wonder what really motivates the folks involved in the “birther” movement? Hmmm…when I look at them I think their obsession with Obama’s birth says something about them and their thinking. Hey wait a minute, maybe this furore and the “h” craziness has SOMETHING in common. Now what would that be?????

  16. Nathan Mills says:

If the decision is made that the H should be replaced, is that a binding thing. I mean, if a business has it’s letterheads, signwriting, cards etc without the H, there’s nothing to stop them, particularly in the current climate, exhausting stock and then reordering with the ‘correct’ spelling yeah?

What if they choose not to? It’s not like breaking a real law is it?

The question is: How many dead Kiore can one Party swallow? Empirical evidence appears to be mounting. By the end of this Parliament, we will all know the exact number.
