Campbell Live covered my member’s bill and the super city privatisation issue last night. Rodney Hide first tried to say that John Key had ruled out asset sales but Campbell picked him up on the fact that Key was only talking about state assets, not local ones. Then Hide objected to my bill on the grounds that it applied only to Auckland! He did say he would like to make the case for the privatisation of the ports of Auckland. Good to see three Auckland mayors expressing their support, but strange that Auckland City Mayor John Banks claimed not to even know about the bill.
My bill gets its first reading tonight, possibly as early as 5pm. For details on how to tune in, click here.
Labour, Greens, Maori Party and Progressive are all voting for the bill. It’s Rodney Hide and the Government’s big chance to prove they are listening to Aucklanders. Let’s see if they take it.
All the best with your bill reading tonight.
As No Right Turn points out, there’s an easy way to get around Rodney’s opposition to the bill on the basis that it applies only to Auckland.
And that is make it apply to the whole country!
Sounds good to me Jarbury. There are certainly other centres, such as Christchurch, concerned about what might happen to our strategic assets.
Well done John Campbell – that was a good interview – I like seeing Rotten Hide getting hot under his collar.
Good luck with the first reading Phil.
While I actually quite admire Hide’s skills in media interviews, Campbell last night shows me that it was not Hide’s skills after all, but the woeful lack of skills by all the other interviewers at play.
This story is another interesting development in the SuperCity story

EVERYTHING the gnats do is a cover for privatisation..oh and then there is the merger with aussie. Key is on record as being in favour of a common currency. He has just allowed more aussie companies to buy up NZ. NZ workers are cheap/slave labour for aussie companies. Why would they not want to come here? Look what is happening to the Telco workers in AK…many do not understand the significance of this . An aussie company telling NZ workers…”Our way or the highway.”
