Even nats semi-official website calling for English to go

Posted by Trevor Mallard on August 13th, 2009

Not sure if the blowhole’s logic is right but I see he is now calling for Joyce to replace English. Remember Joyce is Key’s main confidant. And Cameron is a nat delegate who has his finger on their pulse. As the wise woman says – “It might not happen overnight but it will happen.”

Capital gains tax – argh! No! That would be terrible. I’m not convinced that English should go though.

  2. Cal says:

I wonder if he’s planning any overseas trips soon?

  3. ernesto says:

    “semi-official” – bit much don’t you think?

  4. jabba says:

The only thing I have an issue about is taking his name off the trust for the Wgtn house. He is the MP for down Sth not Wgtn so of course he needs 2 places to live.
Has Chris Carter been sacked or demoted yet?

  5. Clare Curran says:

Well Matthew Hooton certainly wasn’t hiding the fact that he thought Steven Joyce was the second most important person in government at last night’s new MPs event in Auckland.

  6. I would hold my breath on all this. There are currents and cross currents between ministers, within the parliamentary Nats, and within the party, and between regions, but I haven’t seen a death wish yet. As long as Mr Key holds power, he will keep Mr English close to him, as he will also seek to capon potential rivals. And Mr Key is the key to electoral success – if he goes, the disarray will be great, and the voting public will think carefully about the soundness of the National option. More likely medium-term is the trimming of some deadwood in ministerial ranks – an excellent way to keep people on their toes.

Mr Whale may fulminate, but he’s not at the big table.

If you liked his post about English – you should read the ones he has made on chris carter.

I wont link to them (out of politeness) – but they do make interesting reading.

  8. James99 says:

Robert Winter hits the nail on the head here, but still it’s worth a crack in terms of Labour creating a wedge between Key and English over the Joyce conundrum.

This gives Labour some ammo in the house to prod and poke away. Key does this quite well with Labour leadership hopefuls, but it’s not going to get any traction out in the public, at this stage anyway. They love the Key-English combination.

In the public’s eyes English is the gravy and Key is the roast lamb, it’s a great mix. Joyce is tomato sauce, not such a tasty mix, it is with sausages. Anyway enough food analogies.

There’s plenty of room to go hard on a perceived division between Key and English in the house, hell Labour is in opposition at the beginning of a new government’s electoral cycle so go nuts and plant the seed.

The public aren’t looking for an alternative government right now; they were more than willing to last year.

Labour should talk about what Kiwi’s thought they were getting with the Key -English combo, but are now getting with Joyce the money hungry privateer running the show behind the scenes etc etc.

  9. Seti says:

Cunliffe will replace Goff long before Joyce deposes English

  10. Unpleasantly Odouriferous says:

Why do you keep giving that odious person publicity? He’s not connected. He’s not smart. He’s not really relevant. He may have a small following of loyal doofuses – but as a collective they make even Farrar’s next of vipers look positive and intelligent. For my money, I wouldn’t read too much into the ramblings of this guy. I am more interested in what you and your colleagues think and do. Keep feeding this guy the oxygen he so desperately craves and his particular form of political thuggery will continue to burn. On the substantive point, though, I think the tables really have turned on English and he’s only got himself to blame. I imagine he thought he could support Key pro tem while he slowly strengthened his position in caucus. Either through luck or good planning, Mr Key seems to have been dealt a strong hand to dispense with English. He could also take out some of English’s key supporters who, in my view, are a major liability.

  11. Akldnut says:

James99 – Joyce is tomato sauce, not such a tasty mix, it is with sausages (Bennet, Brownlee & Tolly???)

  12. Akldnut says:

Opps should be (Bennet, Brownlee, Tolley & Collins???)

  13. Luke says:

Trev, if whaleoil is the “semi-official” blog of the National Party, does that make The Standard the second official blog of the Labour Party?

  14. Trevor Mallard says:

@Luke I do know a couple of people involved with the Standard – one is a green.

    @Seti in your dreams

  15. Akldnut says:

Luke – The Standard is a left leaning blog whose numerous posters (including guest posters) cover the whole range of parties enveloped by the left.
Whereas whales blog is focused primarily on a National veiwpoint (his own)

  16. jarbury says:

If it’s a choice between English or Joyce as deputy PM, I’d choose English by a mile.

  17. Moi says:

    @jarbury – definitely English. Then Goff in 2011 :-)

  18. Moi says:

    Sorry, I meant Goff / King :-)

  19. Seti says:

Trevor, you seem to imply that Phil has your full support. Doesn’t that jeopardise a front bench position when David finally says he has the numbers?

  20. Trevor Mallard says:

Seti – I reckon that I will be able to prove my merits to the new leader by 2020 when Phil might be wanting to retire after three terms as PM.

  21. David says:

Seti we are 9 months out from the last election, David Shearer has been in parliament two minutes and while a welcome addition, calm yourself. Its like the rubbish media talking about Andrew Little before he has even been selected. These two have reached the top[ in their chosen fields but it dosent always cross into politics.
Phil Goff is an experienced and tested politician and has reached the top, he didnt get there by accident and he deserves a good go at things.

  22. millsy says:

Sorry trev, but blubber boy is just pissed off because not enough mothers and children are being thrown out on the streets. English is safe as deputy PM and Finance Minister for a while yet. Stephen Joyce may be in favour, but I think he is busy (and happy) enough at No 3, and a couple of the more powerful portfolios. I would take that is a hint that there are factions within the National caucus/cabinet, with the Key-ites, and the English-ites at loggerheads – the moderate centrists against the neo-liberal rightists.

Hey bikerkiwi, I suppose deleted offensive one week ban Trevor
