Tolley – it is all for sale

Posted by on July 28th, 2009

In the House today Anne Tolley refused to rule out the transfer of currently owned school land and buildings to PPPs and refused to give one example of an educational service that she would not consider privatising. Of course that includes teachers.

Brash is sure back.

    Principals for sale?

It may be that both principles and principals will be for sale!

PPPs have been a favourite with the right for quite a long time, I think I recall them being mentioned in the last campaign, and it should be no surprise to any voter to hear that the model is being considered for schools.

If the current setup of MOE, ERO, BOTs etc had been able to work better, the question may not have been applied to schools.

Rather than dismiss the idea of PPPs out of hand, I would love to see a case made for the full status quo. Would that be possible?

Arts, PPPs were a favourite of the Blair Labour govt as well.

  5. Kerry says:

The status quo is not all that good, but much of it was bought in by neo-libs in the 80′s and 90′s. Best thing if all schools were state schools then right wingers would have to put there kidas and money in instead of the ghetto isation we have coming.

right wingers are already putting their money into state schools .
    To educate your children.

  7. @Trevor – what is the problem with PPP’s and schools ? You use the word “privatisation” as if that is a bad thing.

It may be that the status quo was brought in by neo-liberals, but the reality of if is not so liberal now.

It is all 3 R’s and education police force, as the system tries to meet the expectations of politicians and parents by whatever means available.

The losers actually may be the students, although this may be not so obvious right now. But you can only kick a system so hard, you can only overload and demoralise a work force so much.

While achievement data improves, sadly achievement standards are broadened and dumbed down. NZQA is trying to get in there and provide better moderation and limits on exam re-sits. But in the end we don’t know what we don’t know, and students don’t know what they don’t know. And politicians know what they don’t know but they are not saying!

The Blair/Brown Government are Tories in drag.

@ George – looking at their poll results they sure look like a Labour party.
