Obese? Overweight? Richie and Me

Posted by Trevor Mallard on July 18th, 2009

As someone who has scored as either obese or well overweight on the BMI index for over 20 years I got some perverse satisfaction from the revelation today that the All Black captain is obese too.

There is a problem with the index as it doesn’t differentiate between fat and muscle.  But the trends aren’t good and as chippie has pointed out over eating especially of crap food will result in major health bills for the country.

Remember we are the most active nation as well as one of the biggest. Not active enough but my generation (40 – 60 males) leads the world and I think that is great.

Fat yes.  Fit sometimes.

So, I should say I’m an athlete and then I’m fine…..

  3. Trevor Mallard says:

No but if you look carefully at those ABs then you won’t see much fat. There are more sophisticated tests that those guys do. So sorry David its not what you say it is what you do…..

    Trevor

You clearly come under the elite athlete exemption as does McCaw.

Four hours a day training should do it. Less weight means a faster bike.

Hey Trev – why do you always bike round Oriental Bay to work? Do you bike to Eastbourne then swim over with the bike on the back?

I (pretty rarely) do a ride from Wainuiomata and then round bays to Owhiro. About 65k pretty flat except for Wainui hill and up to Brooklyn. Some wednesday mornings I do a ride with a few people from corner Bowen and Terrace @ 6.30am. generally round bays, sometimes Makara and very very rarely both.
